Singles : I still love Billie Jean, it was MJ at his absolute peak. That bass line is such a classic.

Albums : I will always love The Queen is Dead by the Smiths, but my vote has to go to The Joshua Tree by U2. I queued up with my friends from sixth form outside Our Price in Derby to buy our copies on the day it was released in 1987. The hype [😉] about the album had been so massive that it couldn’t possibly live up to it, could it? Oh, yes it could. And more. After the first play, I knew it was a classic and that it would make U2 the biggest band in the world.

Where to begin?! So many great mentions already.
Small Town Boy is definitely one of my all-time favourites.
I was just listening to Promised You a Miracle by Simple Minds. Loved that song.
Lucky Star by Madonna
Erotic City by Prince (we used to replace the lyrics as kids with Neurotic Kitty and sing it to our deaf and neurotic white cat).
In fact, everything by Prince then and now.
Strip by Adam Ant
I Confess and also, Save It For Later by The Beat
Der Telefon Anruf by Kraftwerk
Bow Wow Wow's I Want Candy
Up All Night by Boomtown Rats
Uncertain Smile by The The
Unloveable by The Smiths
I could go on forever, to be honest.

Anyone else on a You Tube binge now?! Grin Save a Prayer was the first 7" single I bought from Woollies with my pocket money- to play on my dad's Hi-Fi and if you don't know what I'm on about you have no business here!

I used to sit by my radio, literally praying for that song to come on... alternatively, I would turn to my other shrine, Mtv, and just wait and wait and wait for the video to come one. I was 10. I still love that song.

Something About You

and hundreds of others! It was a great decade for music.

Stressybetty · 28/05/2022 00:51

Grew up listening to Dire Straits, love Roxy Music same old scene, David Bowie China girl. Some pet shop boys, New Order True Faith

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 28/05/2022 00:56

clinkeymonkey

Aye, the tins of Insette hairspray I got through. (Elnett if I was flush) and monstrous tubs of jade green extra strength hair gel for a whole British pound.

I was merely transitioning from her to full on Siouxsie though hair wise. So I will throw Happy House and Spellbound in. Because I can.

And This Corrosion because it still thrills me.

FictionalCharacter · 28/05/2022 00:59

@ClinkeyMonkey I bloody loved Siouxsie.
I’d forgotten all about that hair gel but now you mention it, I remember it vividly 😁

MaChienEstUnDick · 28/05/2022 01:12

Oh hiya pals, we having a disco?

I was lucky enough to be Scottish in the 80's where for ten minutes we ruled the actual (music) world:

Deacon Blue - I mean, anything, but particularly anything on Raintown
Orange Juice - Rip it Up
Aztec Camera - Somewhere in my Heart and Oblivious
The Associates - Party Fears Two
Hue and Cry - Labour of Love
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Perfect Skin
Big Country - everything they ever recorded

But my funeral music is Together in Electric Dreams. God I love that song.

LadyGrillingSole · 28/05/2022 01:17

Rent - pet shop boys

Modern love - Bowie

Loads more but I've had a fucktonne of vodka......

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 28/05/2022 01:28

IceHouse - Hey Little Girl.

Och now. Party Fears Two. And Billy. An impossibly beautiful man.

St Elmo's Fire by John parr

SweetAnnieRich · 28/05/2022 02:35

I worked in Our Price when Joshua Tree was released!
It was all any one bought for a whole week, then hardly ever sold another copy. Everyone who wanted it got it fast!

RunIsAFourLetterWord · 28/05/2022 03:54

I was born mid 80s, so only remember what my parents used to play. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. Oh and The Sultans of Swing. Jack and Diane by John Mellencamp. Eternal Flame by The Bangles. You're the Voice by John Farnham.

CJsGoldfish · 28/05/2022 03:57
