3 year old suddenly very clingy and non verbal

In the last week my 3 year old has undergone a complete character change from being a happy talkative little chap, always pottering round the house doing his own thing, to a child who randomly screams for hours, won't do anything, won't speak, won't answer if anything is wrong, and will literally get hysterical if I'm not cuddling him. (He won't even accept comfort from DH).

At first I just thought he was tired/coming down with something (plenty of illness about!) but it's been a week now, and he doesn't have any other illnesses symptoms?

Ear infection?

Has anything changed in the last week or so? Routine? Teething? Sleep etc?

I think I would take him to the doctor and explain what's going on. Something must be wrong with him

Has he been away from you at all before this ie at nursery before the behaviours change?

I didn’t exactly explain my suggestion.
My son used to get recurring ear infections. In the week leading up to any obvious symptoms his behaviour would really deteriorate. He would be really badly behaved and angry at the world. He was in pain and couldn’t figure out how to tell me.

We haven't changed anything that I can think of. I have been checking for any signs of teething and spots/rashes etc, and can't see anything wrong, but usually he can tell me if something hurts and at least point to the vague area.

I will take him to the doctor I think but without being able to give them a clue of what the issue is it's difficult.
