How much weight loss if you eat nothing at all for 3 days?

I'm curious.

I have eaten absolutely nothing for 3 days now. I am nil by mouth and still awaiting review by the surgical team

I'm wondering how much weight I would lose roughly? I feel horrific

I want to eat. I feel really dizzy

I'm surprised that I'm having nothing other than a fluid drip? It seems to be just clear fluid. Will they just leave the actual nutrition for now? Is that not dangerous?

Honestly it's awful Sad

I think you have to have around 7000 calorie gap to lose 1lb, so probably about 1-2lb. Of course not really the point,. I am really sorry op and hope you are treated soon.

3 days is a long time! Jesus, you must be starving.

lljkk · 26/05/2022 08:32

3500 kcal = 1 lb

If you're lying in bed doing nothing you need < 1800. Maybe only 1200. Depends on your startvmass

So 3 days, maybe just over a lb

Wow that seems immoral.

When I was on nothing but a drip for 2 days, I actually put weight on - 4lbs!

PeterpiperpickedapeckofpickledPEPPAS · 26/05/2022 08:38

They’ll probably be glucose in some of the IV fluids you’re getting so your calorie intake won’t be zero.
Do you feel thirsty? I’m guessing not too bad because again, the IV fluids are hydrating you.
When people need feeding via IV long time they use a different type of fluid - it has to be nutritionally complete. For a short time nil-by-mouth before a operation I think it doesn’t matter that much so it might be just glucose and a calorie deficit.

SlightlyGeordieJohn · 26/05/2022 08:40

Your drip will not be only saline, it will have glucose in it at the very least. That’s not going to help with the feeling of being hungry, of course, but your body will be getting what it needs.

No it didn't! I demanded they check my sugars.

3.5! They spoke between themselves (nurses) and have now overridden the doctors notes of nil by mouth and have left me have some toast and juice

@princesshasnocrown oh my goodness this sounds tough.

I know it's easier said than done (I get all shy around medical professionals, it's ridiculous) but can you question the nursing staff or doctors when they come round, and ask them what's in the IV, and share your concerns about nutrition and how you feel?

I was in hospital and ate nothing at all for 5 days. I only drank water. The last 2 days I had a punnet of strawberries, a sandwich and a couple of those tiny little orange juice things they have. And I'd had a bit of myself surgically removed. I didn't lose an ounce. (And was quite annoyed about it)
There must of been loads of calories in the morphine!

Fedupbuyer · 26/05/2022 09:44

I actually gained weight while I was just on a drip!

Spitescreen · 26/05/2022 11:34

I lost seven pounds in about five days of imbibing pretty much nothing but black coffee, but that must in part have been because I was running about so much — stressful time, and I don’t drive, so functioning on on adrenaline.

thereisonlyoneofme · 26/05/2022 12:38

i lost 6 lb over 9 days in hospital. 5 nil by mouth. on a drip. sadly its gone bac k on

LeeMucklowesCurtains · 26/05/2022 12:54

I gained weight too. I was so bloody annoyed!

After everything I went through, I thought that at least the silver lining would be a hit of weight loss. Nope!
