Lighthearted - do you think school will be open tomorrow?

Much argument here this morning, DS thinks school is off tomorrow as the online term dates show it as a BH, as the BH has moved to next week I would expect school to be open (there are other inset days coming up).

I’ve emailed school to check and I’ll be gone anyway but what would you expect?

Isn’t the BH next week?

RoyKentsChestHair · 26/05/2022 08:16

Ah sorry, I see that that’s where the confusion came in.

No, The change of BH means tomorrow is a normal day surely, unless your school has designated it an inset day

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 26/05/2022 08:16

Exactly, turns out school felt it was unfair staff wouldn’t benefit from the extra bank holiday so have ‘moved’ it to tomorrow and school is indeed closed

Schools were given an extra day to take in lieu of the bank holiday as it falls in half term. Ours is closing a day early at the end of the term but yours might have tacked it on to the half term break.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/05/2022 08:17

Schools have an extra Inset day, but can use it anywhere in the school year. Ours is having it in July.
So there is a possibility it is an Inset day.

Quartz2208 · 26/05/2022 08:17

Tomorrow has never been a bank holiday?

The holiday was moved from Monday 30th to the Thursday/Friday and an extra one added?

BUT schools have been given an extra day to make up for the fact that the other bank holiday is in the given school holiday days it may well be that is the one they have chosen

cleareyesfulhearts · 26/05/2022 08:17

Wasn't the Bank Holiday (in England at least) always next week, just moved from Monday to the end of the week?

All schools have done this - DS had his in October. DD has hers later in JUne

Ah, get it now!

Needmorelego · 26/05/2022 08:18

Because the extra Bank Holidays fall in the half term schools have been given permission to have the days off at another time. Most schools have tagged them on to the school holidays - which is what seems to be the case here.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 26/05/2022 08:18

I’m not sure about this, but as the bank holiday falls in half term, haven’t schools been able to take it somewhere else in the year when they choose? I think our school is finishing a day early in July so we get the bank holiday back.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/05/2022 08:20

Tomorrow would never have been a BH would it?

In my city it's half term next week and the extra BH is being rolled into the summer holidays, starting a day earlier than they otherwise would have done.

Yep, most of our local schools have used the extra day to add an additional day to the school holidays, as it makes more sense than a random day off.

It’s not his school that decided this, it was decided by the government and all schools have got an extra day off. DS’s was on 13th May, mine is tacked on to the summer holiday.

girlmom21 · 26/05/2022 08:22

That's bloody ridiculous

Intrigueddotcom · 26/05/2022 08:23

I would have very little respect for a school that just selected a day to call a bank holiday

Whinge · 26/05/2022 08:23

Why is it ridiculous? Confused

littleblackno · 26/05/2022 08:23

My son has 2 GCSE exams tomorrow so his school is definitely open!!
I know some of the primary are closing tomorrow.

nearlyspringyay · 26/05/2022 08:24

Yep we are breaking up a day early for summer

Needmorelego · 26/05/2022 08:25

@Intrigueddotcom why? All schools in the country are doing this.

MsJuniper · 26/05/2022 08:28

Schools haven't decided this - government has added a bank holiday for the whole country which means that schools are open for 189 days a year instead of 190.

As the jubilee falls during half term, schools can choose which day they allocate this to. Many have chosen Monday 6th June, some tomorrow. Mine had it a while ago.

dementedpixie · 26/05/2022 08:29

I'm in Scotland and our schools are off tomorrow and then again on 2nd and 3rd of June.

Although I think our schools normally have a long weekend at the end of May so they have moved the 30th May holiday to the start of June for the Jubilee.

girlmom21 · 26/05/2022 08:30

@Whinge because they have ridiculous amount of days off anyway and are just getting a random extra day because... why?

Shift workers won't be getting the extra day.

dementedpixie · 26/05/2022 08:31

Although if the school term dates were saying the school was closed then why would you think they would be open?

Shinyandnew1 · 26/05/2022 08:32

School have been told to schedule in an extra day off for the jubilee. It’s not because teachers were moaning.
