Text and follow up call from bank

I got a text saying they were going to contact me about a potential fraud, from the same number bank has contacted me on before.

Then I got a call from a private number. Probably I shouldn't have answered it.

The person was a bit odd, quite stilted speech, but sometimes they are. He asked me about a DD someone was trying to set up for car finance. Definitely not me. Apparently it flagged because it was in a different area of the country to where I am.

Then he asked me to check my app for any alien transactions. All fine.

Then he asked me to tell him what my balance was because "calls are recorded and this would give them a check if there are any incorrect transactions later". I said "you know what my balance is and I'm not comfortable doing that"...and the line went dead.

I've tried calling the bank but "unusually high call volumes..."

Have I given him anything he can use?. Surely he can't get into the app because I did while he was on the phone? How would knowing my balance have helped him?

The bank rang me a few years ago when I sent a cheque for 5 grand to a finance company. I told them I wasn't prepared to give out any details of my account. They said that was fine, can I just confirm that the cheque was written by me. I confirmed it was.
They also blocked my account last year when I transferred online a large sum of money to buy a car .I rang them back and they confirmed it was me and unblocked my account

There are callcenters dedicated to scamming, professional scammers they know how to get you to panic and then ramp up the pressure to make you careless or flustered.
It's really prolific, I'm terrified my old Dad will be caught out he puts his real number in to every form online. We underestimate what tech they have and they know exactly what to say.

I've had this but it was actually my bank , I refused to give the guy any details and then I rang my banks fraud line. Turns out a transaction I was trying to carry out flagged in their system.

They ask for your balance to decide it you are worth pursuing in the scam or just move on to the next number.

Bbc did a series about scam calls which was really interesting, it was based on them hacking into an indian scam call centre, so they have the scammers screens etc up, shows the whole process and why they ask for the info that they do. Cant remember what it was called but it was on daily, late morning on bbc1

What did your bank do when you called?

Went through everything that was said, I gave the scammers no info and yet they managed to get a transaction through by bamboozling me. The "fraud" happened during the call, the text was a set up to prime for it.
I got my money back, but had to reset all banking password etc. New bank card as well! I'd used it on 2 online transactions that weekend, could be a complete coincidence but I shan't use either retailer again.

With Rav Wilding @ChatterMonkey ?
It's the one I saw, they should put that on at primetime, so informative.
