A joint of Beef

I bought a joint of beef for dinner last week (from Asda so in the tight clear wrapping) for one reason or another didn't end up using it. It's been in the fridge since last weekend, snd I went to put it in the freezer to use ar a future date.
I checked the date and it said use by 27th May! I'm now doing dinner this weekend but for some reason feel a bit too worried to use it this weekend as its been in the fridge a week.

Would you say it's OK to use?
(I had covid Christmas 2020 and not got my sense of smell or taste back so I'm not a good judge if something smells "off")
Thanks x

I’m confused. It’s dated for next Friday?

Ylvamoon · 21/05/2022 09:18

If it has been in the fridge all this time and hasn't a "slimy / sticky" type of film or changed colour it's perfectly fine to use.

I would just ensure it's cooked thoroughly- not mideum, pink in the middle.

It’s well within date. It will be fine.
Beef is hung for weeks before use.
Also if it would be ok if you froze it and used it later why wouldn’t it be ok now. Freezing doesn’t turn back time

I can get like this about meat, but I always remind myself that if it's in date it could still be on the shelf in the supermarket today and I wouldn't think twice about buying it. Your fridge at home is just as cold - maybe colder - than the supermarket one.

Thank you! I know I'm being silly and I've even had the conversation with myself about buying it today and using it tomorrow!

I suppose because it's fresh, I didn't think it would be in date for 2 weeks 😕

@Ylvamoon I would say it's changed colour slightly in that it's not as bright as it used to be. More of a duller red I suppose

Of course it will be fine, its well within its date!

Ylvamoon · 21/05/2022 09:45

@Ohbuggeritsme- sounds fine to me. A bit of colour change is normal.

Ohbuggeritsme · 21/05/2022 09:46

Thank you all!

It’ll be absolutely fine. Beef should be hung for a couple of months anyway.

Ohbuggeritsme · 21/05/2022 14:15

@Shade17 thank you x
