Your best guess for what this journey will cost me in fuel

I'm driving up north from the south east next week. And then obviously back again. It's a round trip of 500 miles in a new Mini (well, 6 months old) and I'm trying to work out total costs of this trip. Petrol not diesel

I only do short journeys usually, where I just pop in and out around town etc all day on and off so not sure about a long trip

I think £100, my husband thinks closer to £70

I've found this to be pretty accurate www.fleetnews.co.uk/costs/fuel-cost-calculator/

My diesel car (Kia Ceed) would do 500 miles of motorway driving for about 2/3 - 3/4 tank of fuel. That would cost me about £60.
I know petrol cars are generally less economical but petrol is cheaper so I think your husband is probably closer in his guess than you unless minis are hideously uneconomical.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 20/05/2022 19:33

I would guess one and a half tanks ish. My petrol car does about 360 miles on a full tank but it's a bug engine 3l turbo thing - so a mini should do more on one tank. How much to fill your car up?

My 1l petrol would need about £75 of petrol for that.
BUT I'd probably fill up before I left home, and fill up again half way home, so mentally, it could be "two tanks of petrol" which would be closer to £100 at current prices.

Google the average mpg of your car.

Divide 500 by that number, multiply by 4.5 (number of litres in a gallon) then multiply again by the price per litre of fuel.

Your car will probably be slightly cheaper than that if it's mostly motorway driving

I’ve calculated petrol @ 42 mpg @ £1.70 per litre will cost c£90.

Shade17 · 20/05/2022 20:17

It rather depends on which engine is in your MINI and how fast you drive. Cruising at 60 will use significantly less fuel that at 80. If it’s a 1500cc triple and you don’t hammer it I reckon you might get 50mpg. 45.5 litres at £1.70/litre is £77.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/05/2022 20:20

Work out using the cost per mile for your car in the link below, but they'll go up by 1 June as obviously prices are higher now.

Plus round up a bit unless you're a very economical driver because they're not generous anyway.

PatriciaHolm · 20/05/2022 21:38

In my car about £90 but DPs mini is more fuel efficient than mine, so I think somewhere between the two!
