What did I hear outside last night?

At about 2.30am there were really loud high pitched noise in threes like yip yip yip in the road. I stood looking for a really long time, but didn’t see any movement (although I’m short sighted and my glasses were downstairs). I was aware of it for about one and a half hours, but I don’t know if it stopped or I went to sleep.

The sound was similar to a squeaky dog toy, and I think there were at least two animals (or birds) because the noises seemed to be coming from several different places. It was very load and shrill.

We’re not rural but it’s a quiet road next to a playing field one side and a park opposite, so lots of bushes and trees. We get a fox occasionally, but this wasn’t him. Ive googled the sound hedgehogs make too, but it’s not that.

can anyone help?

Fox orgy.

Frog orgy.

I was thinking owls. Tawny owls sound like those squeaky dog toys sometimes when you are trying to get to sleep in a really uncomfortable tent.

Foxes murdering a frog

Or frogs murdering a fox? The amphibians strike back!

Being serious, it does sound like it could be an owl.

Short eared owls make this noise, there's an audio clip of one on this RSPB page

We had an owl in our walnut tree the other evening, and I think she was training her babies to fly from all the hooting, tooting and then screeching ..... it was quite enchanting to start with but by 2am I wanted a starting pistol Grin

Yip Yip Yip could be a fox.

We heard that, then an almighty fight where I recognised our cat's voice. Cat came in with ginger fur trapped in his claws tthat was more coarse than another cat's fur.

Foxes. They make some really weird noises.

Most likely foxes either mating or killing a bird as used to have them where I last lived, the sound was like an old Banshee sound.
