Does this need medical attention? Pics

DH cut underneath his toe and his nail, two days ago (probably but he doesn't know how or when).

It's red/purple, hot and swollen.

He's taken antibiotics he had prescribed in case of skin infection, when he couldn't get through to GP yesterday.

It's now oozing, and still very hot and swollen. Black line is where I drew around it.

Ouch, I would ask for medical help. My DH had a toe turn purple and swollen from a cut and I forced him to go A&E thinking it was cellulitis - I was right. He was on an antibiotic drip for a few days then better.

Would get it checked out as soon as you're able to, hope all is okay.

Haggisfish3 · 19/05/2022 19:17

Yes I’d definitely be getting that checked out!

What antibiotics is he on? Was it prescribed for this injury?

They weren't prescribed for this injury, but in case his skin got bad again, they are Amoxicillin 500mg 3x a day.

Yes (I’m a nurse) I think that needs urgent medical attention. Amoxicillin isn’t necessarily the best option for something like this. I think it needs looking at, he might need IV antibiotics to get on top of it. Do you have a walk in centre or urgent care near you? 111 might be able to sort an appointment out.

TheGlitterati · 19/05/2022 19:37

Amoxicillin isn’t the best antibiotic for a skin infection. Flucloxacillin would be better. I’d be inclined to go see a GP tomorrow or if you don’t want to wait, A&E, especially if you struggle getting into GP.

TheGlitterati · 19/05/2022 19:38

I don’t think he needs IV antibiotics by the way. Unless he feels unwell in himself, I would say it can wait until tomorrow but I’m not a doctor and you have to do what you think is right. Don’t take medical advice off the internet!

Thank you all. He's soaked it in TCP for ages, (spilling it all over the carpet, now it's triggering my asthma). He's not got a temperature and feels fine, so is refusing to go anywhere. I've managed to get him to let me put a bandage on it, and depending how it is, will either insist on seeing GP or go to A&E tomorrow. If he gets hot/shivery/sick or unwell, I will of course get him to go to A&E tonight.

The line was drawn two days ago, so it hasn't actually spread, but just looks horrible and oozy, making me worried.
