I was woken up at 3 o'clock last night by boy racers tearing up and down the country lanes nearby. In fact, there is virtually no time of day when I can't hear one of them. They seem to drive round and round the neighbourhood 24/7. Don't they work? And where the hell do they get the petrol money?
They are so loud that the sound goes right through the house. Even with the windows closed and earphones on I can still hear them. There seems to have been an increase in the number of cars with modified exhausts as well. So far as I understand it, they're illegal. Apparently, your car is not allowed to make more than 70 decibels of noise, which is equivalent to a flushing toilet. If that is so, how are they getting away with it? Why do the police never pull them over and warn them, or even fine them??! And how are the garages getting away with fitting them?
I can't even enjoy a country walk now. We live in a valley, and when they start, the sound reverberates all over it. Now, instead of birdsong, all I hear is mmmmmmm...pap, pap, pap, bang, bang, bang...mmmmmmm. They're driving me insane.
Don't misunderstand me. I'm not being an old misery. I have no problem with young men enjoying their cars. If they've worked hard and that's what they love, then great, save up, buy a nice car and enjoy it. But why do they have to modify their exhausts and upset everyone else? And why are they allowed to get away with it?
