Persuade me not to do this.

Quit my job.

I hated being a stay at home mum during lockdown and working has given me such a lot of self worth.

However, I have it in my head that I want to take my little one’s first year of school off so that I can be there for her (pick up, drop off, sick days etc) as I have been teaching full time for the last two years. I have missed out on her preschool years 😭

Plus, my job is so very hard and is giving me the kind of stress that makes you feel sick to your stomach.

I know there are some tough talking mumsnetters so please help me to get this thought out of my head. It’s all I can think of right now.

@BrutusMcDogface work place training comes to mind.

WallaceinAnderland · 31/05/2022 18:31

Ah, shame you chickened out as you could have had the whole summer off without having to prepare for next year too much. Would have been lovely getting that pay cheque in August knowing you're not going back in September. Ah well, never mind. I hope you get your dream eventually.

@WallaceinAnderland !! Where were you when I was making my decision?! 😉🤣

I’m totally going to leave at Christmas if things don’t change. Giving it one more term. It does mean I won’t settle my child into school that first term, which still makes me cry 😢

I was here! I posted earlier giving very good reasons for you to go ahead and do it. One more term won't be too much longer to wait but you'll probably miss her nativity and everything. Summer is a much better time to finish. Are you sure it's not too late?

BrutusMcDogface · 01/06/2022 15:15

So sorry, Wallace. I should have checked back 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oh gosh, @WallaceinAnderland ! I really do apologise as I’ve just read your post and you did give fabulous advice! I do worry a little about getting a job again but at the same time, I’m not sure if I’d even be looking for a teaching job anyway. Ho-hum.

Your skills would transfer into many jobs OP. Just work out how much you need to earn. There are always admin jobs going in the NHS and they are very flexible. Usually from about 18-37.5 hrs a week. Career progression is encouraged too so even if you take a pay cut you can work towards a more senior role. Also, you can pick your field and work in an area that you are interested in. I moved from school to working in children's therapies. It's so interesting and more rewarding I found. Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

If you can afford it and your DH is supportive...do it.

Take a year or so out, settle your teen, be there for your little one, decorate the house. Then maybe go back as a supply teacher.

A friend of mine did this, building her hours up as the kids got older. It's worked really well for her.

She won't remember if you were there or not, that's parents guilt. Look for the cause of your stress and address that
Been there and took a less responsible role, best thing I did
Good luck

Why do you say she won’t remember? Firstly, she will, and secondly why is what she remembers a reason to do something or not?

A child will not consciously remember being comforted or abandoned but it will still affect them.

Besides, mothers have memories and needs too. This one wants to spend more time with her youngest.

Then you have your answer. If you look back on your life, you will have a happier view if you take this opportunity to be with your baby xx

Just a thought- if the stress is getting to you this much, do you potentially need to be signed off by your GP?

catsandquails · 04/06/2022 14:38

Also for what it's worth, I think you should resign when you can. Like somebody else has stated, people generally don't look back and wish they had worked more and spent less time with their family.

BrutusMcDogface · 04/06/2022 16:55

If I feel this bad on Monday morning- or worse- I might actually attempt to contact the gp (easier said than done!)
