Anyone been referred for (non pregnancy) ultrasound?

I've been referred for an ultrasound because of some weird bleeding/pain lately- just wondered if anyone else had been referred lately and how long the wait was? They didn't give me any indication and I'm quite anxious. Tia x

I was referred for one last year for mid-cycle spotting - they did some other tests (including a smear, some blood tests and an internal examination) first and only referred me for an ultrasound because I have health anxiety and I had a lovely GP who wanted me to feel reassured.

Because it was non-urgent (ie they didn’t think I had cancer so I wasn’t referred through the two week wait programme) it took about 2 months for my ultrasound. When I went to my appointment I was only a few days away from my period so my uterine lining was very thick, which meant they couldn’t get a full view of everything, so they told me to come back once I got my period and was on day 3. They then did a thorough examination and everything was absolutely fine - mid cycle bleeding was put down to ovulation bleeding.

It was a great and very thorough experience for me. I hope yours is the same. Did you doctor tell you you were on the two week pathway? Mine did explicitly tell me I’d be waiting a couple of months as I was non-urgent. I’m sure if you phoned your surgery or emailed and asked for the info they would tell you.

It took several weeks even though I was referred on the 2 week rule. Someone in the department downgraded it when they got it. However I did get a last minute cancellation, so was slightly quicker than I was going to be.

I went last year and it took ages. The hardest part was actually getting an appointment as you had to phone up to do it, and each time I was on hold for about 5 hours….

Once I got the appointment through though it was a couple of weeks wait, and then about a month for the results (which were normal so might have been quicker if something was wrong)

Gynae? I was referred on the 2 week pathway last year, seen within 2 months..
Referred under non urgent route for urological ultrasound 7 months later and seen within 3 weeks.

There's info on waiting times here but I think it's more about having been referred to a specialist rather than for tests.

JorisBonson · 16/05/2022 15:36

Several times, both internal and external. I can't remember exactly how long the wait was each time but I can't remember thinking it was particularly long.

Pennyrropspenny · 16/05/2022 15:42

Yes I’ve had one, internal (probe inside, painless) and external over stomach. The wait wasn’t too long. Turned out to be a cyst one time and another time an ectropyian (unsure of spelling). Both turned out to be harmless things and nothing to worry about. They do these often OP and it’s just to make sure you don’t have something going on that could be fixed or improved with medication ie endometriosis. Try not to worry too much, it’s a very routine sort of scan.

Pennyrropspenny · 16/05/2022 15:43

Sorry just realised you were asking for wait times only! Apologies. I don’t think it was too long, a few weeks.

DH had an ultrasound on a testicular lump, not under the 2ww, in 8 days.

my gynae ultrasound took 12 weeks 🙄

Saz12 · 16/05/2022 15:44

Depends on which bit is being scanned. I had one on my thyroid together with a biopsy and it took ages to come through (I ended up going private), apparently it’s harder to get a non-abdominal one done. Also had abdominal one which came through v quick.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/05/2022 16:00

Two weeks.

Needaholidayplease · 16/05/2022 17:11

Great thanks everyone, that doesn't sound as bad as I thought, I was expecting months and months. Hopefully will be seen quite soon!

I've had a few in the last few years. Reading the replies you have already had it must differ by area. I am north west and never waited more than 3 weeks

JanetandJohn500 · 16/05/2022 17:44

I got referred 3 weeks ago and I'm going next week at 6pm. I get paid time off work for hospital appointments so was slightly disappointed to get an evening appointment 🤣

PandaOrLion · 16/05/2022 17:48

I’ve had loads. Last one was a referral date of three years time but was contacted after about six weeks with an immediate appt.
