Tomorrow I'm going to start exercising, what should I do?

I hate exercise but I need to do it for my mental health, I'm low and lethargic.
I never know what to do though, any suggestions?
I have some light weights.
I just need to get over the mental hurdle of feeling really silly and self conscious.

I'm extremely overweight, unfit, and hate gyms. I go to aqua aerobics 3 times a week - despite that horrible walk of shame (parading my flabby body) to the pool (there are women sizes 12 - 30 there, nobody looks), it's great because I get the exercise without getting all hot and sweaty.

I also do Zumba Gold (I used to do the proper Zumba but since having a stroke, it's now too fast for me) once or twice a week.

Incidentally, I'm 63

I would just walk more, no equipment or special clothing required. Get up and get out of the house and walk, build up your steps and your speed as you feel comfortable.

Thanks I have to take my dog for a walk but he's a total dawdler and very sniffy so an hours walk doesn't benefit me in any way!

I don't like exercise but I find the easiest exercise is walking while listening to a good podcast. I can manage to get in 10 k steps most days and more on weekends. I agree the best exercise is what you enjoy and can do daily without fuss or expensive equipment.. I am also going to start lifting weights at home in front of the TV each evening.

I have the answer to this! Aquajade! Seriously gets you active and less lethargic and is good fun. If you don't like exercise, it's the way to go.

aquajade

Nandocushion · 15/05/2022 19:55

OP if you don't like whatever exercise you're doing, you won't keep doing it. Can you try walking to start? I assume you don't hate even that.

cheeseisthebest · 15/05/2022 19:59

I'm not doing any exercise at the moment cos can't find anything I enjoy!
Yes I'm happy to walk but the walking i do with dog each day is too stop starty to have any benefit to my fitness and i don't have time to do another walk!

I like Sharona's Hill on YouTube, lots of different videos which target different areas, different step amounts etc. She's very smiley and enthusiastic which I find helps me, but might not be for everyone!

I think it depends on what you like. I have recently started to get fit. I love swimming so do that 2-3 times a week. Also have an exercise bike which I use for about 15 mins a day and while on there I do a 15 min cardio workout with weights.

My motivation is recent diagnosis of osteo arthritis and keeping my knees moving is important.

You may not be 50 but Fabulous 50s on YouTube is great.

Twizbe · 15/05/2022 20:04

Yoga is great for people who don't like 'exercise'.

Find a class on YouTube for beginners and see how you go.

Lampzade · 15/05/2022 20:07

Speed walking - fantastic exercise. Walking is underrated.

An exercise that I discovered a few years ago.
It is called Fight Klub and involves boxing a stationary boxing bag to jungle music.
I absolutely love it. There are women of all sizes and you can work at your own pace.
You get a full body workout
I actually look forward to the class

MrsLJ2014 · 15/05/2022 20:11

Lucy Wyndham videos on YouTube.
Lots of different levels and types of exercise.

MrsJorahMormont · 15/05/2022 20:19

Watching with interest.

Fight klub sounds amazing 🤩, I need to see if there’s a class near me.

HermioneWeasley · 15/05/2022 20:30

If you have light weights you can do body pump. It’s the only exercise I don’t hate

CockSpadget · 15/05/2022 20:31

Have a look into rebounding. Has some great health benefits!

They have franchises. They have classes all over the country

Ds goes out the door to school.

I set a 30 minute Alexa timer, then play Spotify and just go for it for the full 30 mins.

I do this 5 days a week.

I do all sorts. I sat one day and googled exercises for every part of my problem areas, arse, thighs, tummy, bingo wings etc.

So it’s made up of a mix of star jumps, squats, donkey kicks, fire hydrants, scissor things (I can’t remember the technical name, lay down on your side legs opened and closed) sit ups, skipping rope, arm circles. I’m sure there’s more I do.

I don’t like exercising but I’m trying.

danni0509 · 15/05/2022 20:47

Also YouTube there are lots of free videos, I like Lucy Wyndham Reed or Chloe Ting.

I prefer to make it up as I go along though, i like to include plenty of 1 min rests usually laid down flat with my face down in the carpet 🤣

Vallmo47 · 15/05/2022 20:49

Swimming. And I HATE exercise. For whatever reason I really enjoy Lane swimming and the interaction you get from other regulars.
