Currently sat in my car outside my new gym which I signed upto earlier in the week.

I can’t bring myself to go in. I was aiming to go swimming but I know it will be busy now and I can’t swim very fast so don’t want to hold people up.

Im extremely overweight and self conscious and feel stupid.

Go on in!! Poke your head round the swimming pool to check how busy before you get changed. I bet it won't be that busy!!

Go in! I promise you you won’t hold anybody up, most pools have a slow lane you can use. You’ll feel amazing afterwards. If you’re feeling self conscious remember at the gym most people are there to work on themselves so they’ll be thinking about themselves and not you. Be brave and go in. I understand how you feel, I am a bit overweight and it took a lot of courage to start going to the gym but now I love it and go as much as I can. You can do it!

Thank you. I made it in…
The pool is really busy as there is lessons and family swim going on. Maybe I need to try a bit later.
Going to go into the spa for a bit and get myself a accustomed with the place and settle my nerves

It's common misconception that other people are going to looking at us in the gym. Everyone will have their eyes on the equipment. You'll be just fine.

Sportycustard · 13/05/2022 18:22

You pay your membership just like everyone else and you have just as much right to be there as anyone else, however slow you might be.

Everyone starts somewhere. The speedy swimmers were in the slow lane some time.

Well done. The hardest part is getting through that door. Even if today you don’t manage to swim it’s fine.

Ah, crosspost. Ok, more usefully:

check the timetable (??online !!??) to help figure out when there are quiet day time sessions or late night. Lanes are usually quiet late in day. And ask the staff when it's very quiet in pool. People in our slow lane are very very slow. As long as you try to keep moving, you are fine for slow lane. And so what if you delay someone just because you're slow. They can hire a private pool if they can't tolerate other people in "their" lane.

redambergreen70 · 13/05/2022 21:19

I went… it was busy but the slow lane was pretty empty so I did some laps and then went to the spa.
Thats the pool tackled, just gym floor anxiety to overcome now. Thanks for all of your support 😀

Get one of the gym team to write you a programme - they should go round with you and explain everything as they write it down for you to refer to on future visits. Well done!
