DS2 is determined to go to a German uni for a semester in Oct this year. He'll be Y3, and has zero German. He's been doing some Duolingo, but finally has some time to get stuck in.

Babbel seems to be well rated. What do people think?

Is it taught in German or English? If the former he will need a minimum standard of fluency and that will be difficult in six months. Try the Goethe Institute for courses. Future Learn do some free ones but they are more about holiday conversational vocabulary.

The course is delivered in a mix of both; with an English recap, apparently.

I personally don't think it's a great idea, but it's only 4 months or so; the benefit being the other 6 or so months are on a UK work placement which will help his CV. He's 21 and keen to do it, and I remind myself that I trotted off to Germany for nearly a year, aged 17, without a word of German, years ago! 😂
