Fibroadenoma - no biopsy?

Hi everyone. I had some shark intermittent pain in my right breast recently and went for a Check up, where my doctor (who also did my ultrasound and manual check) noted I had a fibroadenoma. She said my mammogram was clear and it showed up on the ultrasound. She recommended no further action and a check up in 12 months.

I asked if it needs to be removed or biopsied and she said no. Everything I’ve read here has been that fibroadenomas are usually biopsied to make sure.

Has anyone had one and not been biopsied? I’m 38 by the way.

Had several diagnoses and never had a biopsy. I think they can usually tell from the mammogram/ultrasound and only biopsy if they are unsure. Sometimes quite painful but oddly enough I found very padded bras helped. Never thought I'd ever wear a wonderbra but it really helped.

I’ve had several fibroadenomas (ae?) and they’ve all been biopsies but I have family history of bc so it’s just belt and braces. They can tell by the ultrasound what it is. Try not to worry (easy for a stranger to say).

@SockFluffInTheBath @Cazziebo Thank you both so much! You’ve put my mind at ease, I really appreciate it.

I have 6 fibroadenomas and none has ever been biopsied and never caused any further problems or anything either

RichardOsmanIsHot · 12/05/2022 14:54

Mine was only biopsied because it was large (over 3cm).

rainbowandglitter · 12/05/2022 15:01

I have one and it was biopsied. She said there was really no need as I was so young but did it anyway

Fadeout83 · 12/05/2022 22:53

Thanks everyone. It’s reassuring that many aren’t biopsied. If I’m worried I’ll go back for another chat. Thanks for reassuring me in the meantime.

Mine wasn't biopsied, just an ultrasound

Protocol states anyone over 25 should have a biopsy to confirm its a fibroadenoma. Anyone under that age would only be biopsied if it was large.

FindingMeno · 13/05/2022 07:57

Please don't worry.
If there were any doubts at all it would be biopsied. Mine was - twice- because it wasn't typical.

Seems this isn’t the case in Japan where I live, recently moved from Australia (where it seems the Protocol is that anyone over 35 may be biopsied). Sigh!!

I found a lump in my breast on the 8th June and got ultrasound and mammogram this morning. Surgeon said it's a solid lump, took a biopsy. She said she's got low suspicion of being it malignabt but she can't be absolutely sure. The results would be back in a week. I'm worried sick. I've got a severely disabled child. Has anyone's fibroadenoma turned out to be the dreaded?
