Shireen Abu Akleh shot dead

I am not sure what to make of this, other than WTAF?!?!

Wearing her blue PRESS flak jacket she was deliberately targetted, aolong with other press who are injured.

Israeli's say it was Palastinians; Palastinians say it was Israelis.

Al Jazeera, who she worked for, say it was Israelis.

A new escalation, no matter who did what! Terrifying

That’s terrible news. How awful. Are they implying she was targeted?

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 11/05/2022 10:57

In opart - Al Jazeerah is not well liked by the Israeli's for obvious reasons.

One thing everyone seems to agree on is that there was nothing happening that required anyone to be shooting.

Yes, there’s clearly a lot that could be thought or suspected even without many details. It’s absolutely tragic. I hope nobody adds to that tragedy by speaking rashly. May she RIP.

Heartbreaking news. Shireen was reporting on an Israeli army invasion in Jenin and was clearly wearing a press vest and helmet. She was a renowned journalist, a veteran, there is just no way they mistook her for somebody else (not that it would be less tragic if it was somebody else killed by the Israeli army, just that she was very recognisable). It’s not the first time and won’t be the last, the absolute bastards.

Somewhat comforting that the Palestinians took her body immediately and protected her from further harm or tampering.

It's terrible. There is footage of a young Palestinian man rescuing her body and getting fired at too. I'm sure this will be ignored by the international community tho as usual.

So so sad. The video of her lying there whilst the people around are powerless to help is devastating. Rest in peace Shireen.

SlickShady · 11/05/2022 16:59

I'd go with the people who have form for targeting civilians. How many innocent Jews have been killed or maimed by 'Palestinians' in the past month alone?

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 11/05/2022 17:14

The problem with such statements is that the alternative perspective is equally valid.

But thank you for dropping by and insisting on making such a partisan post.

It must be obvious that wasn't my intention, and other pps have said the same, let's not let religion or politics take away from remembering a brave woman, and the fear now instilled in many other journalists.

This was an unconscionable act and that message is more important than playing the blame game.

No more unconscionable than the 3 innocent Jews killed in Elad last week. Or indeed the many others run over, beaten, stabbed and shot to death on a weekly basis. I'm trying to find your posts on those evil attacks.

Have you posted on these attacks rather than berating the op for their thread?

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 11/05/2022 17:41

I don't remember seeing your posts on that!

I do remember decades of aggression by many in that region. My point is that this is an escalation, breaking all sorts of globally recognised accords. Journalists have long been a protected species in war zones. For many good reasons.

And now the funeral is disrupted, coffin bearers pushed...

Oops. Posted too soon.

Coffin bearers were pushed... video evidence of them being beaten and kicked whilst trying to carry the coffin to the grave site.

For decades I have swung between sort of supporting, but mainly condemning, both sides in this, what was called the Arab Israeli Conflict back in the 80s when it was on the school syllabus, modern history, FFS! Even now, with this blatantly aggressive action it is too easy to point a finger, take a side, when it's far too complicated for any partisan thoughts.

How the hell does this ever get resolved? So many places with pointless, endless violence, self aggrandising leaders, religious factions, poverty, hatred...

Gaaaaargh! Happy Sunday!
