I remember in the early 9Os watching a documentary about 2 men who were partners, living with and ultimately dying from AIDS. Found it on YouTube and watched it again at the weekend. I've not stopped thinking about them. It's called "Silverlake life, the view from here" 😭

Also another one, again early to mid 1990s called "The dying room" about China's orphanages.

There was a very good one about domestic violence that I’m sure half of MN watched where a real like story is re enacted and the perpetrator goes to trial portraying himself as a befuddled middle aged man.

he gets off.

at the very end of the documentary he admits he did it

it was around 2016-17 and I’ve often thought about it. I’d like to see it again if anybody can help?

is it The Trial, murder in the family.

The Trial was really good an made me realise I'd be useless on a jury as I change my mind every 2 minutes! Very relieved I'll never be called up for jury service.

I LOVE documentaries. The ones I have never forgotten:

Man on a Wire
Grey Gardens
Touching the Void
The Dawn Wall
King of Kong (who knew a documentary about the Donkey Kong video game could be so good?)
Hoop Dreams
Bowling for Columbine
Tell me who I Am
I Know My First Name is Stephen
The Fyre Festival one
Abducted in Plain Sight (for being absurd)
Dreams of a Life
All the 7-Ups
Amy
The Senna one
Searching for Sugarman
Black Fish

I Know My Name Is Stephen was so tragic. The postscript stating that he had died in an accident shortly after filming had finished 😢
The grief of the family who missed home terribly then welcomed him home only to realise the Stephen they knew was no more.

Searching For Sugarman was brilliant. I especially loved seeing his family, his lovely daughters who described how he took them to museums and galleries and kept telling them, the world is yours, don’t hang back 💜

One that I found quite brilliant is The Painter and the Thief about a painter trying to track down her work that has been stolen and the friendship she strikes up with the thief. Amazing piece of work.Intriguing characters.

A documentary about dominatrix Madame’s, I was actually impressed that a woman got paid to have her bathroom cleaned by a man as she shouted at him.

I remember saying to a friend the next day that it seemed like a great way to get out of housework AND get paid for it. She said, "What if he doesn't do it very well?" & I said, "Just shout at him some more until he does".

Sugarplumfairy65 · 12/05/2022 14:34

I remember one back in the late 80's about Brazilian street children.
It was harrowing. These poor children who were orphans and living on the street were often killed by not only people who didn't want them in their neighborhood, but also by some of the police force. A British guy who lived there set up a charity to help these children get off the streets.

I was a lone parent and very skint in those days, but I sent a cheque for £5 which was a lot to me.

I'm so glad someone else remembers. It was so shocking

Oh gosh I remember this . That one particular scene was awful we’re he just came up behind her and penetrated her. Made me feel sick .

Threebutterflies · 12/05/2022 16:22

Just watched the dying rooms on YouTube . I don’t understand how they could just leave the baby at the end to starve to death ? Isn’t that torture and murder ? I know filmmakers arnt ment to interfere but for gods sake how could they just walk away ? That’s going to haunt me now for a long time

A drama based on a true story called murdered by my boyfriend.

A documentary about young carers. There was one girl of about 13/14 who cared for the whole family and she had many younger siblings, both the parents had learning difficulties and the Mother was blind. The girl said she wanted to die some days. I remember her coming home from school and the baby was in a heavy filthy nappy and they had been waiting for her to change him. They were planning on just keeping having more children. I often wonder what happened to her.

@Riverlee I started to watch that documentary, they were wearing weird animal masks to hide their identities. It became apparent that one man was so dominant and made his much younger do it, I had to turn it off.

Fat Girls and Feeders, again women being exploited by men.

A documentary about dominatrix Madame’s, I was actually impressed that a woman got paid to have her bathroom cleaned by a man as she shouted at him.

Oh gosh I remember that poor girl from the young carers documentary. That was really sad. I also wonder what happen to her. I must have been quite young when I watch it but I remember thinking how selfish the parents were.

There's something wrong with Aunt Diane.
I watch a lot of true crime/miscarriage of justice type documentaries but this one has really stayed with me.

Just watched that today, so good. Gaslands about fracking in Michigan has stayed with me, and forever put me off fracking

QuebecBagnet · 12/05/2022 17:00

Where are people finding Theres something wrong with Aunt Diane to watch?

MorrisZapp · 12/05/2022 17:04

A Family Divided on BBC Scotland was harrowing but amazing. The Clark family in Greenock had 17 children, all but one were taken away from them.

The siblings were strewn around the country in various foster homes, from the barely adequate to the heartbreakingly abusive.

They didn't know of each others existence. One of the daughters remembered her foster mother saying to her 'if you're up the town, never go with a boy called Clark' but not telling her why.

A very emotional watch. To see them now is humbling.

And Steven's brother became a serial killer. It's such a horrifying and tragic saga.

Oh god. A few.

Abducted- in plain sight. I mean seriously letting a strange man take their daughter out all the time. Stay in her bedroom. Let him.marry her. Wtf

Black fish- absolutely heart breaking.

3 girls- particularly hard going. Especially when one was decided to not be the " right kind" of victim so she never got to have her day in court. So wrong.

One about Jaci Lee duggard. Massive police fuck up so busy trying to pin it on the step dad they didnt even search the garden . She was there the whole time.

One about a drug addict. Incredibly open and honest and unbelievably brave. The poor dad couldn't retire as he couldn't afford to due to rehab etc. Think the guy died in rehab in the end. Never got better. Was really sad.

.I love a good documentary . this program has always stuck with me but not so much a documentary. Remember anika rice? She did one about the Romanian orphanages . I was a kid at the time and it did actually traumatise me for many years

Oh I do. It was so sad. The way those children were treated was inhumane.

ScreamingMeMe · 12/05/2022 17:10

I've just found it on YouTube.

Pistorius about the death of Reeva Steenkamp at the hands of Oscar Pistorius.

Really interesting watch and made me question the events and his true intentions.

2 for me. I saw 'The Dying Rooms'about the Chinese orphanages. Also when I was 14/15 I went to a Catholic school and with out any warning or parental consent, in our PSE class they made us all watch a documentary on abortions. It was so graphic, showing footage of actual abortions and the 'product' left at the end. Going into graphic details about equipment used and what it actually does and interviews with doctors and nurses and the worst things they have witnessed... and most horrendously, showing footage of an abortion and ultrasound sound being carried out at the simultaneous. To this day I still struggle to reconcile what I saw and I'm now 39! ... that said, it didnt really have the full desired affect as I still believe women should have the right to choice and it still has a place in our society.

labazslovesliving · 12/05/2022 18:27

my mum sobbed her heart out at Cathy come home it was shocking how they did what seemed like all they could to destroy the families rather than help them.
I think you would call it a documentary but i loved The Family from the 70s so controversial

dancingmonkey · 12/05/2022 18:31

Saving for later!

BertieBotts · 12/05/2022 18:36

@PlntLady you might be reassured to know that that abortion documentary was very misleading with some clever tricks to what they showed which meant it appeared more horrific than it was. I'm sure abortion is not a nice thing to see in any case but the foetus at the age they showed could not feel pain or fear as they don't have the brain development for that yet. Outright lies about the equipment as well and the distressing images were from much further along in development. You can read more about it if you Google the silent scream hoax.

John Pilger, Year Zero. John was a young journalist in Phnom Penh as the Khymer Rouge took over the country and murdered over 25% of the population. He was later portrayed in the film The Killing Fields. A very moving account that brought the atrocities in Cambodia to the world.
