I remember in the early 9Os watching a documentary about 2 men who were partners, living with and ultimately dying from AIDS. Found it on YouTube and watched it again at the weekend. I've not stopped thinking about them. It's called "Silverlake life, the view from here" 😭

Also another one, again early to mid 1990s called "The dying room" about China's orphanages.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown

One from ?the 1980s about three American women who wouldn't deny being Communist (I think) & so were imprisoned in weird conditions. Can't remember what they were actually convicted of. I once looked it up & found out what happened to them, but I can't remember enough about it now.

Blackfish

Beyond the Clouds - about life in China. Lovely.

@bubblicious3 yes I saw that one about the porn actress. It was about 20 years ago. She was horribly abused by a guy called Max Hardcore I think? I’ve never forgotten it. She was so vulnerable at times, surrounded by men with no choice but to do what they say. Horrendous.

I'm so glad someone else remembers. It was so shocking

@bubblicious3 not sure if it’s the same one you’re thinking of but there is an old Louis Theroux episode where exactly this happens, I watched it recently. Very sad.

@bubblicious3 I totally remember it and it has haunted me for years. No one else seems to recall it. The American guy was so disgusting and abusive and the girl so young. He had anal sex with her in his office with v little warning, and framed it as part of her audition. It was bloody horrendous. She was v clearly in pain, shocked and scared.

I've just found it - it's called Hardcore. Not sure I could watch it again, but thankful to know I wasn't going mad. Going to Google to see if there is any follow up on Felicity

knightsinwhitesatin · 12/05/2022 07:03

@bubblicious3 actually just googled it, could it be ‘Hardcore’. Made by Stephen Walker.

Yes it is. It's so horrific. Am just trying to find out if there was any follow up

bubblicious3 · 12/05/2022 07:10

Yes I remember both the Dying Rooms and Hardcore. If I remember, the 'actress' came from Canvey Island, Was very naive.(sp?) She had actually all the boxes including doing anal although she didn't actually want to. The bloke doing the documentary said that very often the filming takes place in out of the way locations so the 'actress' is in a very vulnerable position if she decides not to go ahead with anything. She was a single parent and said she was doing it so her daughter had a better life. Let's hope she doesn't get to know what mum had to do!

I remember other porn actresses being interviewed about the hardcore guy saying what a pig he was :(

lollipoprainbow · 12/05/2022 07:25

A change of sex about Julia Grant. I remember watching it in the 80's and found it again on bbc iPlayer. She was so brave. The way she was spoken to by one of the doctors was disgusting. Sadly she died last year.

lollipoprainbow · 12/05/2022 07:26

@Figgygal yes it was fascinating !

AbsolutelyLoveIy · 12/05/2022 07:29

There was a very good one about domestic violence that I’m sure half of MN watched where a real like story is re enacted and the perpetrator goes to trial portraying himself as a befuddled middle aged man.

he gets off.

at the very end of the documentary he admits he did it

it was around 2016-17 and I’ve often thought about it. I’d like to see it again if anybody can help?

Children Underground (Romanian street children)

Country Boys - PBS documentary

A drama based on a true story called murdered by my boyfriend.

A documentary about young carers. There was one girl of about 13/14 who cared for the whole family and she had many younger siblings, both the parents had learning difficulties and the Mother was blind. The girl said she wanted to die some days. I remember her coming home from school and the baby was in a heavy filthy nappy and they had been waiting for her to change him. They were planning on just keeping having more children. I often wonder what happened to her.

@Riverlee I started to watch that documentary, they were wearing weird animal masks to hide their identities. It became apparent that one man was so dominant and made his much younger do it, I had to turn it off.

Fat Girls and Feeders, again women being exploited by men.

A documentary about dominatrix Madame’s, I was actually impressed that a woman got paid to have her bathroom cleaned by a man as she shouted at him.

We watched Our Father on Netflix yesterday, worth a watch and just shocking.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/05/2022 09:31

What was the Netflix one about a young nun who was murdered as she uncovered abuse? The name completely escapes me.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 12/05/2022 09:42

There's talk of a new documentary on Netflix called "our father" which looks interesting.

The Keepers?

Paying the price, Killing the children of Iraq. Documentary about the devastating effects of UN sanctions and how half a million children died as a result. I was only about 15 at the time of watching it and I remember crying at one particular scene where a nurse broke down because yet another child had died due to no medicine. It has always stayed with me.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 12/05/2022 09:47

Forgot about the recent one with the guy who murdered his pregnant wife and 2 daughters in the US. He was having an affair. Tragic story 😔

Yes, that’s the one. It was very strange, and I seem to recall had random shots of animals in it as well.

Chris Watts. I just don't know how anyone could kill their children like that. They were such sweets girls. And he just threw their bodies into an oil tank, so nobody could find them. His wife was pregnant with their son too. Just an evil man, but it was very satisfying watching his story unravel and seeing him get convicted.

Two have stuck with me.. One when I was a child... For some reason I was allowed to watch a documentary about the Klu Klux Klan and it gave me nightmares for weeks.
The second was a documentary film The Silent Twins Very very chilling!!

I've not read the full thread so not sure if it has already been mentioned but i watched The Drug Trial: Emergency at the Hospital (BBC) and it was horrifying!

Its about one of the most infamous medical emergencies in recent British history, when six healthy men took part in a drug trial that went terribly wrong.
