I remember in the early 9Os watching a documentary about 2 men who were partners, living with and ultimately dying from AIDS. Found it on YouTube and watched it again at the weekend. I've not stopped thinking about them. It's called "Silverlake life, the view from here" 😭

Also another one, again early to mid 1990s called "The dying room" about China's orphanages.

Another one -

A Year of British Murders (Channel 4).

I also watched the True Crime episodes of the 'We Are England' series on BBC IPlayer at the moment and I'm still upset about them - unsolved murders (or ones that are solved but they don't have enough evidence to prosecute) are always so sad.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but Roll Red Roll, about a young girl raped by high school footballers and the attempted cover up by the school so the boys football careers weren't ruined. What the poor girl had to go through was terrible but there is some justice at the end.

Just watched a documentary about the Whitaker family :( They are an inbred family in the US. It's so sad but they are very sweet, especially Ray who is non verbal.

@Alakazam8 the one with the girls was Britain's Youngest Boarders I think, but this looks like the same thing so maybe I've got the name wrong

There's another similar one about boys at Sunningdale somewhere.

I watched this and it was heartbreaking. Wonder what happened to the children and families as they must be late teens by now?

The Bridge about suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge

How to Die in Oregon, about assisted dying

Haven't read all through so don't know if someone has already said this, but a programme about a South American surgeon who more or less rebuilt the face of a boy whose face had been damaged or eaten away by an infection. He might have adopted the boy. Super programme, long time ago.

A very old thread but just watching The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off as a result, oh Johnny, bless him.

I remember another series around 5 years ago. It was called "My last summer" about 5(I think) people who had terminal illness. 4 died during the series and as far as I know, one is still with us. She has motor neurone disease.

I came on to sat this. I think about it often, watched it with a dear friend, who sadly passed away herself just a couple of years after we watched it. Extremely moving television.

There’s a thread discussing this in Telly Addicts if you haven’t already spotted it!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2025 09:28

It was on the radio, not TV, told by the (by then) old lady herself. She had a new baby sometime during the 1940s, probably WW2, was in an isolated rural cottage after a very heavy snowfall. Baby was bottle fed, and she couldn’t get out to buy milk powder. However she had a large Alsatian dog that had recently had puppies. In desperation she put her baby to the dog’s teats - the dog accepted it very placidly and her baby survived well enough until the thaw.

Absolutely brilliant to see this thread boosted up again. There were some excellent recommendations and it looks like new PPs are adding more. Fab.

My DS told me to watch this. She also said to not read anything about it first. Totally unbelievable😮

Am watching it right now I'm hoping I'll be shocked as it's boring so far .

Aw, I remember that one. Johnny had such great sense of humour. I loved the Heinz beans on his coffin.
Didn't he die on the train?

Beaniebobbins · 01/09/2025 19:20

Making a list of some of these for some autumnal viewing, hope they are still available to watch. For some reason I was thinking about the up series today even though I haven’t seen them in years.

An interesting recent documentary is confessions of a brain surgeon on I player. It follows Henry Marsh post retirement and is fascinating. I think some of his older documentaries are recommended in earlier posts too.

TokyoSushi · 01/09/2025 20:02

Yes, I think he did die on the train, it was so sad 🙁
