If 2 dc get Dla can both parents be carers and not have to actively look for work ?

Do both have to get carers allowance or just show the award letters ?

Hi there, tbh I don’t know he answer to this, I have one child (young adult now) and DH is carer at present and I work as I can earn more than DH.

It might be worth contacting UC and asking as I’ve found them to be pretty helpful over stuff.

Woth two children I am guessing it’s harder to meet their needs alone. You’ll only get one lot of CA and as such they might expect the parent not getting this to work.

ConfuseMeTotally · 10/05/2022 17:16

Can we not both claims carers allowance for one child each and then would we both be allowed to not work ?

Are we meant to stop then have a certain length gap as well before claiming or can we stop and claim straight away , will they consider it to be intentionally unemployed or will that not apply due to the dla

Yes.
Assuming the kids both have care component at middle rate or higher...
You can each claim carers allowance for a different child. Then top up with a joint UC claim.
You will both count as carers and have no obligation to look for work.

Blue4YOU · 10/05/2022 17:21

OP - no you can’t as far as I know. And you only get one amount for both children.
do you actually think you can live off carer’s allowance?
do you know it is ONLY £69 a week..?
For four people to live off?

Info here. It will very much depend on the severity of your children's disability.

But we would get UC and the rent paid etc ?

Carer’s allowance doesn’t depend on when you stop working. It’s not means tested.
universal credit is means tested.
Do you have savings?
dDo both children already receive DLA?

ConfuseMeTotally · 10/05/2022 17:23

And 2x carers allowance each week if we both claimed it ?

OP posts:
ConfuseMeTotally · 10/05/2022 17:24

You have to earn under a certain amount to claim carers allowance ? Is it £120 a week and can’t claim if get more ?

yes both already get dla

No savings

The order yo
make the applications are DLA - each child needs to get middle or higher rate care component.
Then carer’s allowance.
UC depending on savings but I’ve never applied for UC

ConfuseMeTotally · 10/05/2022 17:26

It’s so confusing I can see you get a carers element but if you get carers allowance they deduct that , ?

child element and disabled child element and we would get rent help but it was the looking for work part I was really unsure about and worried they’ll say ‘well you gave up’ and refuse the claim

Already have DLA have had that for a while and awards run till 2028

I dont think can claim carers till you aren’t working or warming under a certain amount ? I’ll look that up.

i think I’ll have to give UC a credit a call tomorrow and ask as I’m totally confused

Yes you can both claim it and yes you can live off it so ignore pp saying you can’t, I am a single mum and I don’t work as my child has a disability, I manage fine. I still get CB CT and some income support (I’m on the old system) so yes it’s doable

Blue4YOU · 10/05/2022 17:30

So I e just checked: you and other adult can claim for one child each.
So £69 x 2 - £138 per week.
Turn2Us has a benefits calculator so you can work out if you are eligible for UC - if you stoped working

SleepingStandingUp · 10/05/2022 17:31

I think you get the carers each (you put in a claim for Jack and him Jill) and then you'd get the old tax credit element with a disability premium, plus the old HB element, but you wouldn't get the job seekers bit. That's the bit that requires you to seek work. What you need to do is work out if
DLA x 2
Mobility?
CB x 2
Carers x 2
UC

is enough to give you the quality of life you want. With carers there is scope for you to both work very part time if that is possible /would help.

How old are they?

Thankyou that’s really reassuring

genuinely we are beyond exhausted. Just cannot do it any longer

Sorry for the awful spelling- got my disabled DD in my arms.
I only get Carer’s Allowance and my DD gets DLA as my DH works

Blue4YOU · 10/05/2022 17:32

Do check the calculator before you make any changes though OP
