NEXT DOOR APP - does anyone use this and how useful is it?

Ive never come across this app/page before but a friend told me about it as she uses it to connect with locals as she's got a small bus.

Ive looked at it but you have to enter ALL your personal info including full address etc Only 6 people on mine in my neighbourhood.

Does anyone use it and what do you think to it?

Came off it. Occasional useful post, but mostly full of people asking stupid questions "does anyone have any leaves" during autumn time.
Also, people (mostly one offender) posting non stop shit jokes, anyone that ever complained about having their email and feed spammed by said jokes was a spoil sport and hounded of the site

MrsHaroldRobbins · 10/05/2022 14:34

Agree with PPs, I get about 25 notifications every day, usually either about lost cats, people outraged about a dog in the park being off its lead, lots of grainy Ring doorbell videos of (totally unidentifiable) people in hoods wandering past houses at night looking "suspicious" Confused Occasionally it's amusing but rarely useful!

TheDogsMother · 10/05/2022 14:35

Mostly annoying adverts and annoying people. I came off it and find the Local FB group more useful.

We also have a poet who writes really, really bad poems that go on forever. He's harmless but then there's the antivax conspiracy theorist gobshite that's always spouting nonsense, yet seems to have the same sycophants fawning over him in their responses.

The racism and xenophobia is rife though and it's like whack-a-mole in reporting them. If anyone decent responds about what race has to do with whatever vile comment someone has made, then there's a massive pile on from other halfwits. Plenty of 'ur only sayin wot every1 really thinks hun'.

We have a poster who only posts really bad jokes and puns.

parietal · 10/05/2022 14:41

I use it but with notifications turned off and I did not enter my real name. I put a 'nickname' that I never use in place of my real first name, which means that anyone who googles me won't find me.

it is useful for free-cycle type stuff, i.e. giving away things I no longer need, and sometimes for recommendations for tradespeople / local activities. But there is an enormous amount of junk on there too.

I agree with everyone else, handy for finding tradespeople recommendations. Otherwise it's mainly cats - lost ones and general cat botherers, 'this cat is in my garden, is it lost?’. It's a bloody cat Terry, it's doing cat things, leave it alone. As well as cats it's mainly dog shit, suspicious white vans looking to steal your dog and/or kids, travellers, parking, warnings about scam text/emails and plenty of xenophobia.

Occasionally there's a good spat which is the only reason I stay on it.

Yes, spats and cats sums it up! It’s really quite entertaining. There was one ?lostcat post which stated that the poster had ‘found’ a cat (minding its own business) wandering round her street and had got it shut in her house while she tried to find out if it was lost! Well, if it hadn’t been, it was now. The owner was probably wondering what the hell had happened to it!

Chaoslatte · 10/05/2022 14:52

I use it in the browser rather than the app but I don’t find it enormously useful. Mostly people asking about jobs, lost cats and warnings about people trying car door handles.

Prerapher · 10/05/2022 15:15

@CopperLily ...You made me smile 😊 I've moved recently but your summary of 'Nextdoor' could have been written about my 'ex' neighbourhood's version....lost cats...dog shit....🤣

User3568975431146 · 10/05/2022 15:28

I was invited onto it but lasted less than 20 mins. Didn't like it at all

Leftbutcameback · 10/05/2022 16:04

Occasionally useful, usually full of the worst kind of local rows! Also threats of libel action on ours!

BigWoollyJumpers · 10/05/2022 16:11

About 80% of our village are now on it! I have found it really good for tradesmen recommendations and for getting rid of unwanted toys, and various odd things. A basin we didn't use for our refurb, 50 history magazines I didn't want to recycle etc etc. They all have another life, which is great.

Yes to lots of lost cats, dogs and round here, loose horses!

BigWoollyJumpers · 10/05/2022 16:13

Recently lots of offers of help, and support groups set up for newly arrived Ukrainians, which is lovely too. Useful to use the "near to me" option to get the wider community.

PradaOnaBudget · 10/05/2022 16:20

I only used it for about two weeks but I did not have to enter my address, just the name of the road.

In my area, it was dominated by post by one woman, who was clearly unwell and used the app like a diary.

GrunkleStan · 10/05/2022 16:53

I picked up a couple of gardening customers through it last year so it can't be all bad.

SailingNotSurfing · 10/05/2022 18:12

Mine has been useful for finding a local plumber, and a 'no job too small' handyman.

I scroll past the posts about the cyclists on the coastal path - it's a shared pedestrian and cycle way FFS. I feel like telling the moaners to learn to share.

I scroll past the moans about people putting their recycling bins out late at night and waking the whole street up and people with apparently no sense of decorum who put their washing out on Sunday.

I managed to get rid of some ride on children's toys and mini trampoline without any hassle though.

So in conclusion, I take the good bits and ignore the bad, like everything in life.

I'm in London so get lots of grainy Ring doorbell footage of fairly identifiable people in hoodies nicking parcels! And yet they never get caught. It's a wonder anyone gets a reliable delivery around here.

Els1e · 11/05/2022 06:05

I’ve got it. Most of it’s ok, trade recommendations, plant swops, road closures, community meetings, charity shop appeals. I just ignore the ones I’m not interested in

dublin29 · 04/09/2023 11:35

Has anyone used Next Door App for getting tradespeople to do small-medium jobs at your home? I went on quite recently & had a bad experience, as some have said, appears to be a mini local Facebook complaining about tedious neighbourhood stuff. Plus the man who came to give mea quote was over an hour late (should have listened to my gut instinct about not trusting him. He was grouchy, complaining about his old van & then quoted me an over the top sum, for my micro garden, in front of my small bungalow.

I have no experience of hiring trades people, being disabled & older, I was prime for ripping off🤔😕
