The size of it!! Shock I got the shock of my life, this monster was on my kitchen tap. I thought it was a spider at first glance because the legs were so long and they stuck out. I reckon it was nearly 2 inches in size. I caught it in a glass & put it on the edge of my mini pond. Is it a hornet?

Oooh that's a beast, well done for rescuing and not squishing.

M4ple · 08/05/2022 21:25

He was SO big I could've made as many meals out of him as the famous MN chicken Grin

It's a sawfly isn't it? The stripes don't look like a hornet. It's difficult to tell from the picture though

longtompot · 08/05/2022 21:33

Looks like a Queen wasp. They are quite active now looking for nest sites

M4ple · 08/05/2022 21:33

I just looked up sawfly but it says they don't have a waist & this beastie does. I'm gonna see if I can put the image through an identifying app.

We had to liberate one of these from our living room earlier - they're huge aren't they? You can hear them land 😂

Skinterior · 08/05/2022 21:38

I think they're a type of Asian Hornet

Morechocmorechoc · 08/05/2022 21:39

You shoukd have killed it. Now there will be a whole nest of them.

2pointfourmonkeys · 08/05/2022 21:42

I think it's a European hornet.

Dunnoburt · 08/05/2022 22:02

It's definitely either a hornet ot a hornet moth.....

longtompot · 08/05/2022 23:02

Further research and it appears to be a European Hornet. Hornets aren't aggressive unless they feel cornered or threatened so don't kill them. They are scary though. Big & noisy. We did some grape picking many years ago and had quite a few buzzing around.
