First birthday celebrations

My DS turns 1 next month and I want to arrange some kind of birthday celebrations for him.

I'm well aware that it's as much for me as it is for him as he won't fully understand! But I'm thinking something fairly low key - family and close friends (maybe about 20/25 people), with some food and toys so people can sing him happy birthday etc.

Just wondering what others have done for a first birthday that's worked well? Or ideas where we could have it as it's too many for our house but not enough to hire a hall.

For all of ours we have grandparents and great grandparents round to the house - spilled into the garden so not too squashed.
Buffet tea.
Generally let them play.
When the little one came along the others were older so I seem to remember we did a bit of pass the parcel and musical chairs for the older dc, but obviously if yours is the first baby, then no need.

We did a close family bbq round at my mum & dads and a M&S cake.

It is totally for you and he won't have a clue.🤣
