Anyone used piriton for toddler cough?

DS has been poorly for a week and a half, with fever and cold symptoms and cough. Been to the GP a couple of days ago, chest all clear and said viral.

DS is much better but the cough is horrendous, it sounds very wet and mucuosy especially after sleeping, and he’s been sick a few times because his throat sounds so thick and he coughs til he retches.

even though he’s propped up it’s bad at night and a friend suggested piriton for a couple of days. DS does get hayfever so I was wondering if this could be exacerbating the cough, and even if it isn’t hayfever was wondering if it would dry up some of the mucuous? Anyone tried it?

I’ve got a humidifier on, vicks on his feet with socks, propped up the end of the cot, he has warm honey and lemon before bed and I give him a drink if he coughs a lot in the night. It seems to be bad when he first wakes up but is on and off throughout the day. He’s two.

im desperate for us all to get some sleep, he’s shattered!

My DD gets terrible coughs. I’ve not tried it yet but piriton has been recommended to me by friends to dry the coughs up. Hope he feels better soon.

Yes, I get hayfever and it exacerbates my asthma and makes me cough. My ds gets hayfever and it makes him cough - I presume because he has a lot of mucus to clear.

Sorry to say the obvious but have you ruled out covid ? That sounds just like my covid cough which was worse at night

@LethargeMarg sorry I should have said, yep tested and all negative!
I might give it a go for Naptime he’s so tired. He woke at 4am having a coughing fit on and off and then didn’t go back to sleep - I’m very tired too!

I have had a cough for 40 + years and it is only recently that I have worked out that it is allergy based and yes, piriton does help.
