Dental stuff - how long to stop hurting?

I had a root canal done on Wednesday morning, very painful toothache before and was told it would take a day to settle. I’m still taking max dose of paracetamol & codine and also Nurofen but it’s still so painful I can’t sleep!! I can’t bite down at all and can only eat soft foods still, like soup.
is this normal? Should I ring the dentist and try and be seen again?!? For those that have had this done, how long did it take to stop hurting for you?

Does it hurt when you bite? Or just generally? It might be that the bite is too high and needs adjusting so if it's agony I would definitely the dentist and let them know, they can adjust that.

Mine stayed sore for at least a week and felt weird for nearly two. Root canals are quite invasive and some people are more slow to heal than others but I'd not expect to be in extreme unbearable pain and certainly not after a day or two.

I've had root canal done 4 times and it should not hurt like that. Maybe a little tender, but not pain to the extent you are having. Definitely go back, in case of infection and it getting worse.

Thanks ladies, I went back and it turned out I had a massive infection in there, had the root canal redone with a warning that I may yet lose the tooth, and have come away with shed loads of antibiotics…
