Can someone explain what reaction notifications are on WhatsApp?

Does it mean you get a notification if someone replies to a message? Even if you have notifications turned off? Or is it something else, thanks

I think it’s like Facebook reactions so you can like a message et. and when someone does that you get a notification.

But surely a reaction is just like a reply? An emoji reply? No?
