Isle of Wight and Ryde School

We're considering a move to the Isle of Wight with DC 11 and 8 as we have been offered jobs there. We lived there for a few years pre-children and loved it, although the ferry (which I then commuted on) felt like a hassle. I'm really interested in any thoughts on living there with kids? Also we'd like to hear views on Ryde school? TIA everyone.

Hi! I'm afraid I have nothing useful to offer with regards to schools on the island or living here with kids as I moved here a few years ago when my DC left home.

I moved not knowing a sole here or even the island very well apart from coming on holiday a few times, but it is a really warm and welcoming place. There is a primary school at the bottom of my road rated 'outstanding' and I love seeing the children walking to and from with their parents. It's a very safe place imo.

I'd suggest reading the Island Echo and County Press online to get a feel for how it is here. Although it's such a quiet place, every car crash, bus cancellation and melting chocolate in shop windows (yes, true!) gets reported!

The ferries are extortionate but you can get a tiny discount for being an islander. There are also independent operators who, for example, run a return 'shopper boat' service to Gunwharf for a tenner but you can often get tickets cheaper via 'The Price Is Wight' website.

Not sure what else I can say other than it's a fabulous place to live - apart from the ferries!

Thank you so much, good to know. We felt much the same way - especially about those ferries!
