Is Singapore worth visiting?

Hi

I am looking at flights to New Zealand for early next year. I’ve discovered for an extra £100 or so I can break up the flight and stay in Singapore for a couple of nights both ways.

I also thought this might be a good way to make the journey a bit less torturous. Is Singapore a particularly touristy place to visit? I always think of it as more of a business hub, rather than holiday destination.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I love Singapore. Mind you, it’s been a few years since we visited - the botanic gardens, night Safari, bird park, all the cultural history (and food).

And so many shopping malls ……

Ooo that does all sound like things I’d really like. I’m definitely leaning towards booking a few nights there.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, a couple of days in Singapore is great. The Botanic gardens are fab, good shopping, hotels etc.

We went there on our way to our honeymoon in Bali many years ago, it's fab! It's expensive but fine for a couple of nights. The night safari is brilliant, or at least it was in 2010!

Yes definately stop over, we ended up stopping in Hong Kong (due to the airlines we ended up using) but I'd done so much research on Singapore it is most definately on my bucket list!

Blaenwgwynfi · 03/05/2022 16:01

Thanks guys. I’m going to do a bit more research but with such glowing reviews I’m fairly sure I’ll end up booking it.

@Ilikewinter Fingers crossed you get to go there at some point! I hope you were able to enjoy Hong Kong, it’s such a great place (or was until recently).

Yes. Singapore is wonderful.

I loved Singapore. Go to those metal trees for the sound and light performance in the evening. And go up to the bar on top of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Not the viewing platform which you have to pay for, but the bar/restaurant on the other side. And I loved the China museum. Thought it would be boring but it was so interesting. So envious of you going.

Singapore is great been for work and for breaking up a trip to Oz.
It's expensive to eat and drink in the vars and proper restaurants but all neighbourhoods have food stall markets which are amazing local cuisine (so do the shopping malls).
Public transport is good to get about and taxis are reasonable if somewhere requires several different bits.
Zoo, Gardens, a wonder around raffles, the park and the night markets are all great to do and lots of lovely hotels with roof top swimming pools!

I love Singapore and am rather jealous that you have the chance to visit.

2-3 days stopover as part of a longer trip is perfect - and definately see the botanical gardens. The aquarium also worth a trip.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 03/05/2022 16:16

Personally I find it quite dull but for a night or two it's a good way to break up a longer journey. There are some nice hotels and restaurants. It's easier-going than Hong Kong, which has (or used to have) a bonkers, noisy, anything-can-happen vibe. Singapore is quite sanitised - literally - and well-groomed.

Worth checking what the current entry requirements would be re covid passes/testing; it was quite hardcore there for a while but I'm not sure if it still is.

Blaenwgwynfi · 03/05/2022 16:16

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I really appreciate it.

The trip is a surprise retirement present for my mum. Given I haven’t been able to go on holiday since Covid, I’ve been able save for the last two years. After 47 years of being an NHS nurse she definitely deserves it :)

I absolutely love Singapore, and hope you and your mum have an amazing time, I’m sure you will!

What I would say about the botanical Gardens is go early in the morning - I think.i went about 7am 20 years ago!
