Inspired by the Healthy Habits thread

Lots of really simple and inspiring ideas on the thread started by @C1239

So I've decided to start this one as a motivator and check in of the healthy habits I'm going to try and form. Anyone want to join me?

I've chosen three, with day one being tomorrow:

30 mins walk each day

Berocca every day (need to buy some tomorrow)

No phone after 10.30pm (other than checking in with my overly sociable DS17)

Hoping that by the end of May, these will second nature!

How is everyone getting on with their new habits? I’m doing ok, didn’t manage to get rid of something yesterday so need to do 2 things today! But apart from that, I’m doing well.

PierresPotato · 05/05/2022 10:52

I'm bored.of water. But still have the glass by me so I have started!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/05/2022 13:25

These are the things that I would like to get done every/most days.

TED talks. Having read an article linked to in the other thread, there are reasons why this might be a good idea first thing, instead of social media/MN/emails.
Berroca every day.
Pelvic floor excercises.
Gratitude journal.
Outdoor walk or excercise bike.
Yoga/pilates via Youtube.
Hand/arm weights for my bingo wings.
Water, by keeping water container by my side.

I need a ticky off chart.

I’m finding it easier to do the water (filling two bottles in the morning has really helped with that) and walking than the screens! Will really have to make a better effort at that over the weekend at least, as a start. So, Friday/Saturday/Sunday-no phone after 9.30, no TV after 10.30. If I succeed in that, I’ll take 10mins off the times for the following 3 days. I’m going to write it in my diary to remind me.

I’m glad I only picked three habits to start.😁

Day 3 and patched the walk. Just wasn't in the mood after a long day at work. Which is silly, because it's probably exactly what I needed.

@andimayormaynot That happens to me too. I’m trying to get a 30min walk in before breakfast and going to work. Or if I don’t get it done in the morning I have my walking gear and runners ready in the bedroom for when I get home, and I do the walk then before I do anything else as I know I’ll find it much harder to motivate myself to go walking after dinner.

Drawing the first pint of water is now tagged onto my morning routine.
I even started a glass 3 yesterday evening which is unheard of really. I've been drinking fewer cups of tea and redbush tea which I'm glad of. Money saving side effect too.😂

PierresPotato · 06/05/2022 11:59

I've been walking more recently but have yet to set a habit with it beyond a loose one of a10/20 minute walk around the block after dinner with some willing family member.

PierresPotato · 06/05/2022 12:03

I think the most useful habit right now would maybe be going to bed earlier as I've been drifting later.

SpongeBob : I tick off stuff on a phone list, it helps.

That’s great as it means you’re starting to develop it as a habit. I used to always have hot water and lemon as part of my breakfast but got out of the habit about two years ago. However, I’ve resurrected it again as, that glass plus the glass I have after my porridge (porridge makes me thirsty for some reason) make up 0.5 of a litre before I’ve even thought about it.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 07/05/2022 17:43

@PierresPotato thanks. Done that now.

WilliowGreen · 07/05/2022 17:55

This is a lovely idea. The 5 minutes of yoga a day is definitely one for me as I hardly ever manage to do a full yoga with Adrienne which are about 20 minutes.

I think I need to eat less sugar. I am trying to reduce my jelly belly and I feel tired all the time.

I might try berocca too. My auntie who is very healthy has it.

PierresPotato · 08/05/2022 10:18

Still drinking my water.

I have done a morning walk. My loose aim this week has been to try to do three bursts of exercise per day. I have found that I can find any excuse not to do it early. So first one is most important. Maybe my "tick off" goal will be 20 minutes before 9 am.

echt · 08/05/2022 10:27

Some good stuff here.

I drink water when I'm thirsty, when my body tells me.

PierresPotato · 08/05/2022 11:52

My body calls for tea with milk at all times.😂

Sirzy · 08/05/2022 11:56

I have been making a real effort to reduce my screen time in the last month because it was getting rediculous. It’s now down over 50% according to the weekly messages from apple and seems to be becoming second nature now.

so next step is to get myself into an proper skincare routine rather than the normal slapdash approach.

Procrastination4 · 10/05/2022 05:46

@Sirzy Gettibgbyour screen time down 50% is a fantastic achievement 👏👏👏.

The amount of time I waste on screens (checking out Mumsnet and an education site I’m on, posting on a walking challenge site on Twitter and playing “Homescapes” ) is ridiculous! I should be taking a leaf out of your book and cut down. When I get my “walking/water/no screens after a certain time” habits established, drastically reducing screen time be in my next batch of three.😁

Twopenny · 10/05/2022 07:18

My three:

Five minutes of yoga every morning - doesn't sound like much, but I know from experience that it really makes a difference with my back pain. Except, in the past, once my back has stopped bothering me I stop doing the yoga Hmm. I've been doing it again for a month and it's already made a huge difference. I just need to get it into my head that this is something I need to do forever.

After literal years of not drinking coffee or tea, I started regularly buying a canned latte as a Monday Morning Treat (why???), with the occasional extra one sneaking in if I had a bad night's sleep or was feeling run down. I want to knock those on the head completely.

Batch cooking my lunches. I can make the stuff I buy for very little time, effort and money. If I buy double the veg, I can basically do it at the same time I batch cook my dinners.

dixiebloom · 07/05/2023 09:35

Mine are:
Outside first thing for 10mins. Helps to set body clock.
5 minute of yoga.
20 mins of exercise.

If I could do the 3 above before morning coffee it would be great as I am a massive procrastinator.
