I've realised I actually hate driving.

I thought it was certain journeys I disliked, but no, I've recently had the realisation that I just actually hate driving, and it doesn't matter where I'm going or how long the drive is.

It manages to be both stressful and boring and I'm going out of my way to avoid it. Currently sat on a bus that will take 45 minutes to get to where I'm going instead of the 20 I could do it in the car, but at least I can relax, Mumsnet, read my book or just zone out whilst someone else does the hard work of driving!

Anyone else?

I only public transport if I really have to.
I'd much rather drive.
I have my music on full blast and sing, it's a great tonic when I'm feeling a bit crap.
I drive from Glasgow to Manchester and back in a day the other week and other than the nightmare diversion on the M6 at 1am I loved it.
It wouldn't have been possible on the train either.

SpindleInTheWind · 30/04/2022 15:45

I absolutely detest driving. I'm very sympathetic, @TedMullins

seperatedmum · 30/04/2022 15:52

as in Owl Ted Mullins in 'sushi for beginners' was it? @TedMullins and there I was reading the thread about declining memory. I'm not mad into driving either for relevance

FelixDaHouskat · 30/04/2022 16:04

Both my partner and I don't like driving; in fact we think cars are damaging to the planet and its people alike

We live in a place with pubic transport, which we use - or we cycle.

We get our big shopping and large items delivered.

It's very possible to live without a car. To thrive, even.

You can free yourself from the car ownership chains!

Haha no actually the vet in Schitt’s Creek is called Ted Mullins and it’s that, but could be any Ted Mullins in the media/literary canon

I used to hate driving. I bought an automatic and it’s so much more relaxing. No more moving those gears up and down whist stuck in traffic.
I don’t know why I hadn’t find it years ago!

I do drive an automatic, and I still hate it! There's nothing wrong with the car, it's a nice car - not so big that I can't manage it, but not so small I feel vulnerable; powerful enough to overtake when necessary, easy enough to park. It's the act of driving I hate, no matter what vehicle I'm in.

Ah, fair enough, just me then! 😆

I learnt to drive quite late - always lived in cities with decent public transport - so I think perhaps now the novelty's worn off I'm remembering that buses, trains etc can be pretty handy.

Admittedly it's a nice day here today, I doubt I'd be keen to wait for a bus on a cold, wet day!

Ditto ! Glad I'm not alone, my dh always bags me, but I just don't like it!

jeffgoldblum · 30/04/2022 16:34

Nags ! Not bags! 🤣

Sunnytwobridges · 30/04/2022 17:38

Nope. I hate public transport. Too many people and germs . And I like to be able come and go without being on a schedule.

felulageller · 30/04/2022 17:49

Hate public transport. Waiting endlessly in the rain. Never knowing when a bus will come. Have to squeeze next to smelly people.

Love driving:
Door to door
Control
Can play my music loud (hate earphones)
Can keep all my stuff there so can rush out the house before I'm ready
It's my refuge
I can eat and drink.
I have total freedom.
Dont need change.
Some roads are enjoyable.

Blaze1886 · 30/04/2022 18:02

I've been driving since 97 and initially I used to love driving but now I don't even enjoy it 1%

I don't know when my feelings changed but I can't seem to go anywhere without encountering bad driving. I think the country is so heavily populated now and there's so much traffic on the roads

I'm currently commuting forty miles a day and going to a job interview next week that is a ten minute walk. The difference in commuting will play a huge factor in any decisions I make not to mention time and cost savings

AmeliaEarhart · 30/04/2022 18:15

Love the implications that public transport users are smelly, germ-ridden peasants 🙄
If every one of them bought a car and took to the roads there’d be twice as much traffic on the roads and even more bad driving and gridlock, so drivers should be grateful really!

AmeliaEarhart · 30/04/2022 18:17

And good luck with interview @Blaze1886! That sounds like an amazing opportunity to make a positive change.

Yes thank you. I'm aware of who Pollyanna is and have read brave new world.

But how is it relevant to this thread?

Public transport Grin Grin Grin
sorry I am a child

PiedATerrace · 30/04/2022 18:35

That was supposed to be 'PUBIC transport'

PortalooSunset · 30/04/2022 19:27

I mean it's not my favourite but needs must. If I didn't do it I wouldn't be able to do my current job.

Iamtired2022 · 30/04/2022 19:49

I agree! My DH doesn't drive so it's down to me to do school runs, shopping, visiting family, holidays etc. I find non drivers do not realise how tiring it can be too. I've got a non driving friend who thinks it's no problem for a someone to travel 10 miles in opposite direction to pick her up. I too sometimes use public transport for the same reason.

seperatedmum · 30/04/2022 21:22

@TedMullins oh I've never actually watched that. my poor brain fished out something I'd read years ago 🤣

Lizziekisss · 30/04/2022 21:27

Love driving except central London, and then I love public transport.

Kite22 · 30/04/2022 21:40

I don't drive for pleasure, I just drive as it is incredibly liberating and gives me so many options that I would never have if I didn't.
Oddly, that struck me again as I was going somewhere this afternoon, where the bus route has just been pulled. Prior to that, the bus would have taken an hour, and put me down about 2 miles from where I needed to be. Although today, I was going there from a different place I was also able to only go to because I was driving. So that's 2 lovely events I attended today that would just not have been realistically possible without driving.

MadgeRussell · 30/04/2022 21:43

I hated it so I stopped. Moved to the city centre and can walk to everything I need, school, work, shops etc. Pay a lot more for a smaller house but so so worth it for me!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 30/04/2022 21:45

I love driving. I find car journeys as a passenger so dull. Train has the benefit of being fairly social if you go with a friend on a day out. Buses are a necessary evil for me - I always get stuck in a seat next to someone snorting and swallowing their own snot. I get off the bus green.

SlatsandFlaps · 30/04/2022 21:49

Wow really? How on earth can anyone hate driving??? I adore it! Especially long drives on motorways/dual carriageways. The only place I'm truly happy is behind the wheel!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/04/2022 21:54

It has the twin evils of being both boring and requiring concentration.
