What can I do with sardines?

I give my dog tinned sardines occasionally and I just bought a 4-pack on offer. Opened a tin when I got home and realised they’re in soy oil, not spring water, so I can’t give them to him.

Much as I like fish I’ve never been tempted by sardines as they smell so strong! If you like them, how do you have them?

Mash them up and eat them on toast!

I got a great recipe on here for sardine and potato bake, was actually delicious. But I've now lost the recipe. Should really Google and see if I can find it

The smell is off putting, but the taste is really mellow. I keep it simple - drain and mash the sardines with loads of ground black pepper and a splash of vinegar, spread on the toast and grill for a minute or two (or microwave, but make sure you cover lightly otherwise you'll have sardines all over the microwave!)

I absolutely love them, but I do like fish a lot.

Splash of lemon juice, chopped fresh herbs if you've got them, grind of pepper. Mash gently with a fork, load on bread and toast. Eat with a salad.

Yes, I eat this a lot. With a side salad of lettuce, tomato, onion and black olives.

sardines are lovely with a bean salad or in a tomato based sauce with pasta.

LakeFlyPie · 30/04/2022 10:44

Mash with chopped red onion and loads of black pepper on buttered toast

Some great ideas here, thanks! Good to know the taste isn’t as strong as the smell. I’ll experiment!

@Joystir59 our pup has had some gastro trouble so we’ve been advised only to give him the sardines in spring water, not oil.

With a bean salad sounds good too Smile

Mashed, on toast with mustard.

Cantonet · 30/04/2022 10:52

Serve with finely chopped mild onion, fresh coriander & lime juice with hot basmati rice.
Or Ottolenghis Puttanesca sauce.

GingerFigs · 30/04/2022 10:56

Mashed up on toast with melted cheese on top 😋

Mash sardines, spoon of chopped capers, chopped olives and tomatoes. Lovely pasta sauce!
