What would you wear to an interview next week?

As above really, I am looking to move out from a very long term job and have my first interview in a zillion years, with no idea what I should wear. Is a black suit and white shirt still the right way to go? Can I get away with no blazer?

What would you wear for an interview - for context it’s a senior / experienced admin role

Hmmm while I would normally go for something more formal, I’m not sure whether these days a suit would be considered too much even for an interview. It depends on the culture of your new company. Could you ask the recruiter if you have one? I think I would opt for a dress in a plain colour and smart shoes. This kind of style would be my inspiration thefoldlondon.com/product/clever-crepe-celandine-dress-summer-red/

Good luck!

I wouldn’t wear a suit, either. (Though bright pink or a flattering green would look contemporary and bold.)

Two more dresses (the first I saw scrolling through my photos). A good dress makes one look so in control of life!

I would wear a smart day dress with a cardigan if it's chilly.
(That's what I wore to my last interview)

What is your job, Camomila?

(I wouldn’t personally wear a ‘normal’ cardigan to anything formal, but I know opinions differ!)

MrsHaroldRobbins · 30/04/2022 09:37

Hi OP, agree with PPs, I would wear a smart dress with sleeves so you don't need to worry about a jacket.

cinnabun18 · 30/04/2022 09:38

I wore a smart blouse and smart trousers with some loafers. I think it's best to go quite smart but I think a suit might be overkill. Go blouse and bottoms nice in the middle. A nice blazer over a simple blouse or shirt could also work. But my place actually dressed casually so I was over dressed to them but it wasn't an issue of course.

onepieceoflollipop · 30/04/2022 09:41

Depending on the role I would tend to go over rather than under dressed if unsure. Middle of the road.
ironed shirt and dark trousers. I was interviewed in the winter so had a very smart coat rather than a jacket and then asked to take it off as I sat down.
the interview person was wearing leggings so I was always going to seem overdressed!

Toponeniceone · 30/04/2022 09:41

I still wear a trouser suit. It's grey. I wear it with a casual top underneath and loafers. It's smart but not ott.

SheWoreYellow · 30/04/2022 09:43

Over dressing just looks endearingly keen. If you just wear a shirt and trousers and your interviewers are in a full suit, you’ll feel a bit awkward.

Howmanysleepsnow · 30/04/2022 09:45

I also have my first interview in a zillion years next week (healthcare, senior-ish) and was just wondering the same. I suspect a suit jacket is too much now, so good to see that seems to be the consensus here! I’d love to wear a dress but that probably is less appropriate in healthcare due to the practical aspect….

Howmanysleepsnow · 30/04/2022 09:48

Can anyone link to some appropriate (and cheap!) trousers and tops please? I’ve been in uniform for a while so don’t have much!
And, good luck OP!

Camomila · 30/04/2022 09:49

I work in compliance (I got the role I interviewed for...it was a nice cardigan in a dark blue, although tbf it was over zoom so they could only see me from the chest up.)

When I started at the company (pre pandemic, so in person interview) I think I had a black cardigan on over a more officey dress for the interview.

TottersBlankly · 30/04/2022 10:11

(I assumed you got the job!)

And zoom interviews do complicate things. As does the actual type of occupation. Right now, this long sleeved dress and boots would be my dream interview outfit. I’m in a vaguely creative occupation and can wear what I like. For something more formal I like this black Lemaire dress.

At more approachable prices Massimo Dutti has a variety of shirt dresses to suit most occasions.

Thanks everyone I’m relieved to hear I won’t need to buy a suit, I have a few smart dresses I can pick from so will use one of those!

Oh gosh yes definitely don’t buy a new suit! Good luck OP with your interview!

SheWoreYellow · 30/04/2022 12:25

Smart dress sounds perfect.
