I find it depressing how much anti-western propaganda there is on social media

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, I’ve noticed (perhaps belatedly) how much anti-western propaganda there is on twitter. The sort of stuff that is consistently anti-US, anti-NATO, anti-democracy stuff there is. So much of it in the guise of “anti-imperialism”. I know a lot of it comes from misinformation campaigns, but it’s so disheartening. Anyone else see this or notice it?

No.

It must be the company you keep.

pictish · 29/04/2022 15:30

No, can’t say as I have.

LetitiaLeghorn · 29/04/2022 15:34

There always seems to be quite a lot of anti UK feeling on MN so I think that's just the way of SM.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2022 15:35

Nope. What sites are you going on?

chateaudif · 29/04/2022 15:37

I see it on twitter, so it’s not the company I keep

This literally makes zero sense. Her company would be the opposite else she'd welcome this content.

Nacknick · 29/04/2022 15:50

Yeah but you influence a lot of what you see on Twitter by the people that you follow 🤷‍♀️…

Knittingchamp · 29/04/2022 15:51

OP yeah it's everywhere. I've kind of given up on using social media.

Miriam101 · 29/04/2022 16:00

I wonder who you're following to get this impression: obviously you're right, there's tons of the stuff out there, but the Twitter algorithm will be pointing you towards the kinds of people/material it thinks you're interested in based on who you follow/what you click on.... Are you by any chance a Corbyn fan?

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 29/04/2022 16:15

It's okay, Elon Musk will sort it all out 😃👍🏻

Chikapu · 29/04/2022 17:21

Twitter is the cesspit of humanity.

TheOldRazzleDazzle · 29/04/2022 17:36

I don’t really do SM, mn aside, but I am not as surprised to read your experience as some others. Early on in the invasion there were posters up in central Manchester about some anti-imperialist demo against both Russia and NATO. The phrases “useful idiots” and “pie in the sky” came to mind. (Being generous - more cynically, I might wonder who and what was behind these groups.)

No, if anything I’ve seen it by seeing the replies to people (mainstream, respected in my view) I follow, or people I follow refuting the anti-western propaganda.

Odd, there was a very similar thread a few days ago. There is propaganda from all sides on Twitter. As PPs have said, what you see is affected by who you follow, like, etc.

FindingMeno · 30/04/2022 06:11

I've not noticed.
Isn't it wonderful though that in the UK we can offer alternative views without fear of being disappeared?

EveSix · 30/04/2022 06:45

It's how it works, OP.
I follow gender critical feminists and people working to end violence against women and girls.
As a result, I see absolutely rank misogyny, either as outright hate and online abuse, or more commonly, dressed up as 'research' or 'studies' or 'data', posted by people engaging those I follow. It's grim. But very predictable.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/04/2022 09:03

Yeah twitter has basically kidnapped my bff

Yeah, that's what made me leave Twitter. The MAP accounts, the glorifying and excusing of violent porn, the victim blaming and minimising of violence and abuse towards women and children.

I'm lucky to have never experienced a lot of the things that were being had waived away and I found it traumatising, I can't begin to imagine how survivors or people in those situations come with it.

But yes OP, in conclusion Twitter is a cesspit.
