Mortgage drawn down - but not yet exchanged?

Hey all, I'm buying my first property.. it's been along old mess to be honest, our mortgage offer expires tomorrow, we thought we would be exchanging and completing this week but communication between our solicitor and the sellers solicitor has been slow. On Monday our solicitor told us she doesn't think we will be exchanging or completing this week and so we should speak to our broker about extending our offer or getting a new offer.

Today, we received a text from the bank saying that our first mortgage payment will be coming out on x date. I called the bank about this and they said that our solicitor has drawn down the mortgage and that this mortgage is now in place on their side and the funds have been released... how is this possible!? We haven't even exchanged yet, we haven't signed anything, we haven't paid our deposit yet! I don't understand how this mortgage can now be in place when we've no done anything!

Has our solicitor screwed up?

I'm in England btw
