No presents request at wedding. Do people comply?

We’re getting married soon after many many years together and have requested that our guests don’t buy us presents. We don’t need anything and would rather people didn’t waste their money on us. Someone has suggested to me that this is a bit rude and that people will bring presents anyway. I’m expecting that we might get the odd present from close friends but is our request rude? Will it really be ignored?

Thanks for all your comments, reassuring that most think this is not a rude request. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

Some people do, which is a pain as you have to thank them for the gift or whatever. I just said I love a nice card but no gifts please weddings cost enough to attend. Thankfully the vast majority respected my wishes.

Can't stand the current fund my honeymoon thing. Gets right on my tit ends. So entitled and rude.

A colleague's recent invite said something like "no gifts and absolutely no money/vouchers - we need nothing but your company". It was a lovely wedding and a massive party.

We just put some cash in the card.

Admittedly over 25 years ago , we had everything.
In the invites we mentioned the fact we pretty much had everything so we didn't want to ask for presents, however we understood people might prefer to bring a gift, so we asked that if they did they might bring a small item with history (not necessarily new) that would remind us of the giver. We were given an eclectic selection of things from the gravy boat my mother used when evacuated in the war (from the daughter of the family who was a much loved family friend) to original artwork, embroidery, hand made photo frame, framed photos from the past, items we'd know when young, a pair of wine glasses with a great back story; all nice meaningful stuff that we still cherish and use to this day. A couple of ladies I worked with bought a lovely wedding album, and the back page they had signed a message below a great photo of themselves.

Thought I’d update. Our wedding happened. About half the guests brought a present. Mostly they gave champagne (some quite posh bottles) and we also received some other wine, a couple if bottles of gin, a cheque (family, not large), a couple of home decor things (again not expensive but nice), some original artwork (fantastic) and a small number of vouchers for experiences. It was lovely actually, nobody spent too much and we had some really thoughtful gifts. And nobody felt they had to buy a present as many didn’t bring one as we had asked.

Good result I think but we are going to have to have a champagne party at some point!!!

If it says no presents, we just put some cash in a card.
If I knew for a fact that B&G were loaded I wouldn’t bother, but the majority of younger couples can usually do with cash.

Ancientbride · 23/06/2022 18:36

We didn’t get any cash at all. We’re not loaded but older and fairly comfortable.

LifeIsARollerCoaster22 · 23/06/2022 18:37

We requested no gifts. Everyone did. Lots cash and vouchers.
Plus 11 photo frames! 5 of which were identical.
3 'his and hers /mr and Mrs mug gift sets

Thesearmsofmine · 23/06/2022 18:40

We did this and most people implied. We did get a few person gifts which was nice sand some people have us vouchers. I like the idea of asking for no gifts but if people want to make a donation to x charity they are more than welcome.

Congratulations.

We said thd same and people gifted similar things to you have had.

We also got a few family experience/days out vouchers which was lovely for people to include the DSC.

chiffchaffchiff · 23/06/2022 19:01

The last wedding I went to said "no gifts or cash, please. Your company is the only gift we need". On their website with timings and details there was a bigger explanation that they'd invited everyone that would make their day special and acknowledging that guests are already spending money to attend so they really did consider their company their gift. I wish I had the wording it was very sweet but firmly reassured that turning up empty handed was expected.

FuncaMunca · 23/06/2022 19:02

We did this for our wedding and yes everyone complied!

Change123today · 23/06/2022 19:05

Our friends have asked for no gifts. Money if you want too but have stated not expected!!
One friend is getting them a voucher for a meal, another has brought a posh bottle of champagne with lovely glasses, one hasn’t said but muted as they travelling and money for hotel etc they honouring the no gift request :) - I’m just putting in money!

When we got married we asked for vouchers - b@q and John Lewis - doing up a house meant we needed them but happy with nothing.

AutumnIsHere21 · 23/06/2022 19:16

We didn’t want/need gifts (similar situation to you) so we didn’t even mention them on the invitation. One older relative insisted she bought us something for the home (as is traditional) so I added a few wine glasses, towels, pillowcases etc to an online gift registry for her (alone!) to select from. Everyone else either popped some money in a card, bought us a bottle of plonk or didn’t bring anything.

Still use my wine glasses! 😁

AuntieMarys · 23/06/2022 19:17

We are off to a wedding next month...no gifts requested. So no, I'm not taking one!

womaninatightspot · 23/06/2022 19:31
