Why is Alexa being such a temperamental, touchy bitch?

I bought DP an Echo Dot, 4th gen for Christmas.

We set her up as per the instructions and away we went. The mood was quite harmonious for a short time.

Fast forward about six weeks. During a storm we had a brief power cut and Alexa stopped working. We tried everything we could think of and went through the troubleshooting pages on Amazon. Every time we said "Alexa" she would light up blue to indicate that she was listening. We'd give her a command (ie. "add carrots to the shopping list") but she wouldn't talk back to us. She was silent but the command would be followed (ie. carrots were added to the shopping list).

This went on for weeks. We tried unplugging and plugging back in, resetting, adjusting the volume, begging, pleading and asking what her problem was.

One day, I gave her a command and suddenly she spoke back! I gave her a second command.... no reply.

Fast forward to today after she'd been mute for several more weeks. I said "Alexa, add bread to the shopping list". She replied "I've added bread to your shopping list". We shit bricks as the volume was up high and not only did we not know this, she had barely said a word for the best part of four months.

I asked Alexa where she had been and got some passive-aggressive response, so I asked her if she was broken, to which she replied "as far as I can tell, everything is working fine" or words to that effect.

I asked her to play one of our toddler's favourite songs and was met yet again with stony silence and now she clearly has the hump and isn't responding.

What is her problem?

Mine goes all coy if you ask her for the weather in Dildo, Canada

Justmuddlingalong · 29/04/2022 13:09

Mine doesn't pronounce the town where I live correctly. So, whenever I ask her the weather forecast, she says it wrong. Don't know whether to take a mallet to her, or just move.

DeusInAbsentia · 29/04/2022 13:42

My issues with devices are thus:

Garmin in my car. "ok garmin, cancel route" She properly barks at me "OK!!!! ROUTE. CANCELLED". She seems to have anger issues.

Ring Alarm. When you set via keypad she says something like "exit mode is starting" but she says it in such a drippy, can't be arsed fashion it always makes me think she'd rather be someone else. An oven timer or door bell maybe?

My newer Alexa devices are a man now. He's much more chilled and I like to think he doesn't Gaslight me as much as she does.

I guess I now know why mine doesn't always work as it should..we keep her sat on top of the microwave and my children and their friends repeatedly ask her to make fart noises and to play the flying bum song!

Irridescantshimmmer · 29/04/2022 14:27

Yeah, Alexa had a moment last night when I said ' Alexa, volume down" and she went berserk and turned her volume to maximum.

It was loud enough to wake the dead.

I'm still recovering from the experience😆

PennyPinkPineapple · 29/04/2022 14:30

😂😂😂

ImInStealthMode · 29/04/2022 14:31

I feel your pain. Ours is an absolute hussy who responds to DH perfectly every time, but only responds to me about 1 in every 8 times and then usually with something completely random Hmm

Tinida · 29/04/2022 14:39

Threaten Alexi to replace her with another assistant and remind her when she shows off her antics.

Incapacitated · 29/04/2022 14:41

Doesn't she like the microwave?

Oh. I wonder if she'd understand if I threatened to put her in it.

OMG how have I never heard that song before. It's perfect!

smine1 · 29/04/2022 22:42

Ask her 'what is one hundred in Welsh' she will definitely never speak again (not while kids are about)

I'd love to but she still isn't talking to us 🤐

@Squiff70 when she's gets over herself ask her 😂

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/04/2022 23:22

I hate my one at the moment, it won't play radio 2 and I keep missing Pop Master😡

90sBritPop · 29/04/2022 23:29

Oh my gif it’s starting, they’re becoming self-aware!

I think Siri is the worst, my Siri is a man and can be the most sarcastic contrary bitch I’ve ever known 😂

Last time I asked it a question I got ‘I’m sorry, who am I speaking to?’

I mean 😂 the sass!!

Eggsley · 29/04/2022 23:30

Ours ignores DH but is more responsive to me. Sometimes I feel quite smug when he can't get her to listen and she does what I ask first time. He can be quite rude to her, whereas I say please and thank you Halo

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 29/04/2022 23:35

My Alexa legit hates me, she won’t skip songs, anything I ask seems she ignores me... someone else asks the same thing she answers straight away. But when I go to my uncles to dogsit me and his Alexa get on famously...😂😂

SheAndHerAreWomen · 29/04/2022 23:37

Don't forget to ask her 'what's zero divided by zero?' Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/04/2022 23:39

Mine started singing the Doggy Song for absolutely no apparent reason. It was a little confusing, but also fairly educational.

Just did. She was quite abrupt 😄

AnImaginaryCat · 30/04/2022 09:12

Alexa can be a man too, now.

Oh god Lol! Thank you for this chat
Our Alexa won't play me The Folk Show no matter how I pronounce it, perhaps it's her line in the sand musically 😂
I have to stop after about 10 goes as I can hear DH rolling his eyes.
She will play him any shit he asks for however.

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 30/04/2022 10:52

So I changed Alexa to the male voice. Didn't tell anyone. DH has just come to find me very confused and asking what's happened 😄
