Britain and Germany had very different policies regarding their relationship with Putin's Russia.
Britain were shameless in their acquisition of Oligarch wealth, whilst ignoring the corrupt origins of that wealth. But it has proved easy to implement a U turn, and sanction said Oligarchs and their wealth, at little cost.
Germany, in the pursuit of close relations with Putin's Russia, followed through on trade deals, eventually relying on Russia for 70% of their gas supply.
Britain takes 3% of their gas from Russia.
With the development of Nordstream 2, the US repeatedly asked Germany not to complete the project foreseeing the problem of Germany, being a major economic power in Europe, from becoming too reliant on Russia for their energy needs.
Neither Britain nor Germany can claim the moral high ground regarding their dealings with Russia, but, much as I am no fan of Johnson, I give him credit for recognising early on the need to support the Ukraine militarily with training and supply of weapons.
The need now is for the West to remain united in their dealings with both Russia and China, and to recognise that both countries constitute a very real threat to our way of life.
