New employee is a fake, where to go from here?

It's a large organisation and I just had to send off her paperwork, passport, things like that

She was given the job after her second interview last week.

However, she has emailed me these documents (fine), and her birth certificate says born in September 2002?

That makes her 19?

This is a problem because, for example, her CV says she was an Executive Assistant to a Director in 2018? When she would've been in school?!

I've asked HR, who haven't replied properly, I've asked them to call. But someone replied to my email of concern with 'so you don't want this new me ever of staff? Why not?'

What can actually be done about this?

Numbered gcse grades were from August 2021

www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-48993830

My DS left school in 2019 and has numbered grades

ChocBloc · 28/04/2022 08:54

I'd stop telling us all the info on her school etc tbh it could get you in hot water if someone connected sees it

prettylittlethingss · 28/04/2022 08:54

Sounds fake to me OP.

I'm 22- very unlikely for someone so young to have worked such highly skilled jobs, nobody I know has gotten that far yet, the job market is competitive.

I also remember when topshop went under it being a huge thing on social media that everyone was going to add 'store manager at topshop' to their cv.

Her grades would be in numbers too.

I would ask her to come in for a chat. Make it clear that if she's as competent and experienced as she appears to be then she'll still have this job and you totally understand that exaggeration on a CV to get noticed is fairly normal. However, you do need total trust and honesty so this is a one-and-only chance to clarify where the exaggerations are so that you both know where you stand.

The fact that her year of birth meabs that legally she was required to be in full time education until after the date of the first jobs listed on the cv mean that you need her to clarify exactly what qualifications she took when, and which jobs were full time or part time and what real level of responsibility.

If she comes clean and gives reasonable and believable explanations then all is good - she's clealy got a lot of experience anyway and will do the job well.

If she sticks to her guns and says that there's nothing to disclose - well you can get rid of any employee in the first 2 years for any reason that's not discriminatory and not feeling you can trust her is perfectly reasonable. You don't even have to give a reason.

This is awful advice and totally unprofessional, you are basically rewarding someone for lying. Not a good start!

GreenClock · 28/04/2022 08:54

It’s not true that all parts of the uk are using numerical grades now.

But that’s beside the point. There are so many genuine anomalies with this candidate, you’d be crazy to hire her.

Regularsizedrudy · 28/04/2022 08:55

londonnotlangdon · 28/04/2022 07:10

I don't think it's her using someone else's birth certificate surely? She sounds very British, looks British. Her mannerisms. She seemed very professional and able to command a room, speak in meetings etc

Yes I could be wrong, but it's unlikely.

Erm not being a British citizen is not the only reason someone would provide fake ID 🤨

90sBritPop · 28/04/2022 08:55

Report the lists where you’ve shared personal info OP or the whole thread will be taken down.

…and I’m purely thinking of myself here but I need to know what happens 😬☺️

CormoranStrike · 28/04/2022 08:56

you are giving away so much detail - even if fake - you are severely compromising your own professionalism and HR policies, unless you have subtly changed details.

Motnight · 28/04/2022 08:58

I love this thread.

Please let it not be deleted before we find out what had happened 😬

whowhatwerewhy · 28/04/2022 08:58

Watching with interest

This sounds dodgy to me but apprenticeships count as training and are offered by large companies, and so it is possible I suppose, that she was an apprentice who was appointed Vice President of photocopying or something.

But if she had done an apprenticeship then she would have an educational qualification to go with it. She's only put GCSEs on the cv.

MaChienEstUnDick · 28/04/2022 08:59

Well, devastated as I would be to not find out the conclusion to this thread, putting the school on it has made it super-identifiable and if your HR is on MN it might be you getting hauled over the coals OP. Think you're going to need to delete.

starlingdarling · 28/04/2022 09:00

Think you're going to have to delete too but please do make a new non-identifying thread about the 19 year old new employee so we can all find out what happens. We're too invested now.

TopCatsTopHat · 28/04/2022 09:00

As I recall from when I've been involved in recruitment companies have a legal duty to ensure all employees have a legal right to live and work in the UK.
So you don't have to suspect or accuse her of anything to need to get further information if things don't stack up.
Your message to hr is objective and factual xyz doesn't correlate with abc so further proof is needed that we aren't dealing with identity fraud and are upholding our legal obligations.
That's nothing to do with her age, so no discrimination.
If asked, you personally can't wait to have her on board, she seems great but you can't knowingly ignore contradictory facts.

maplegrove · 28/04/2022 09:01

Surely the most likely scenario is she has lied on her CV, probably all tied in with the ‘hustle’ culture online, same as pp said about store manager at topshop. It’s about bugging yourself up and being confident to almost trick your way into your desired position. It can’t be a coincidence that big companies listed on the CV are no longer in business….

Bignanny30 · 28/04/2022 09:02

She may have quite innocently typed the wrong d.o.b. On her c.v. And not noticed.

londonnotlangdon · 28/04/2022 09:02

I'm not concerned About her identify. I think she is who she says she is, by her name and date of birth. Plus I've seen her instagram like I say

But the work history is a pack of lies

I've asked MN to delete some identifying info so the thread isn't taken down

Not very bright if she can t get her dob right if faking !

justasking111 · 28/04/2022 09:03

I had a school friend like this blagged the most amazing jobs wound up in America. Her CV stated she had degrees from UK universities. Used to make me laugh. But she got away with it. Is now CEO of her own international

Lena007 · 28/04/2022 09:03

I used to work with a person who everyone suspected was fake. He looked and behaved very professionally. He talked the game, mastered job interviews but there was a lot that didn't add up. He lied to our senior management at job interview, it all came up to light later and he turned it up to be a misunderstanding. Of course. More lies came up with time.
He was telling me how he prepares to job interviews. He doesn't have an experience in something, he would look it up in google, learn a few principles and figure out how add it to his previous work experience. He always appeared as someone well clued up with impressive (Googled) knowledge. Lies, lies and more lies. He said that once you get a job, it is usually 6 months by the time you learn what to do, and he was always able to pick it up and wasn't worried about getting sacked.
He knew how to sell himself at job interviews to get people impressed. Every. Single. Time. Once you got to know him all sort of crap came out. He left just before he was pushed out after it transpired he wanted to sleep with one of our client's employee. There was much, much more, you could write a book!

I'm not saying she is the same. But Your gut is screaming that something isn't right.

GrandRapids · 28/04/2022 09:03

Just because the OP put the name of the school, age and gcse results, she's hardly identifiable from that!

justasking111 · 28/04/2022 09:04

Company. Sorry screen jumping and posting

catsonahottinroof · 28/04/2022 09:05

I'd just ask for the identifying school posts to be removed.
Don't necessarily think the GCSE numbering system proves much, she may have just worded it this way to avoid confusion. You should ask for her GCSE certificates though, it would help to put the pieces together. If there is even one grade that is below a C or 4, this would be enough to let her go, in conjunction with the questions raised over her cv (it's nothing to do with ageism, it's about trustworthiness).
Also do as someone suggested phone the company who provided the reference and ask to speak to the named referee.

justasking111 · 28/04/2022 09:06

I give up lost a whole post.

Schoolfriend blagged like this amazing jobs. Moved to USA CV complete fiction. Now CEO of her own international company
