Can I upload a picture of my nipple - breastfeeding related!

Suddenly in absolute agony on my left nipple at 4 weeks pp. Obviously I won’t actually upload a photo but Jesus I am in agony! Right below my nipple is a red lump. It doesn’t have a white head so I’m assuming it’s not a blister? It’s also not cracked/bleeding. This red lump is absolute agony. WTF can I do, I’m ready to cut it off 😭

Could it be mastitis?

Chikapu · 25/04/2022 15:40

Does it feel hot? I had mastitis (not breastfeeding and never had a baby) and it was agony, my boob was on fire. Thankfully it cleared up with antibiotics very quickly.

Ouch! It sounds like a blocked milk duct (but I may be wrong of course) google NHS/ NCT and see if it matches your symptoms and there is a lot of advice on those pages.

Not mastitis, unfortunately I have worn that tshirt many times! also only hurts when she latches. its exactly like a blister with no whiteness! ive spent so long looking at medical pictures of nipples trying to find one that looks like mine - no dice!

Does this look like a sore from a milk bleb bursting?! Just noticed it. Hopefully this is PG enough for mumsnet 😁

Sorry I don’t know but wanted to push the post up for you, it sounds painful!

gamerchick · 25/04/2022 21:56

It looks like maybe a lazy latch on that side might be to blame. It happens, been there. Also making sure detaching is correct also. Can you go back to basics with the latch? Nose and chin touching the breast at the same time while tummy to tummy hold?

Chimchar · 25/04/2022 21:59

Could it be thrush? Check your baby's mouth for white patches or spots.

It's been a long while since I've bf but I'm sure this is how it looked on me when my baby had it.

Maybe give your mw or hv a call. Hope you're sorted soon.x

If it's red and agony it seems most likely it's infected.

If you are in a city can you find a local emergency pharmacy you could get advice there?

If not, I'd use a hot compress (clean flannel soaked in v hot water and hold it against it - make sure not so hot it scalds you) as it may bring the infection out. And go to a pharmacy tomorrow morning / see GP.

But I'm not medically qualified at all, it's just what I personally would try tonight.

Could it be a bleb?

oliviastwisted · 25/04/2022 22:05

If it is a bleb a sterile needle and release the blockage. I got them loads.

StuckInTheMiddleOfNowhere · 25/04/2022 22:08

I have what looks similar on my face occasionally and in groin area under boob . Ive had them lanced, worst was between my eyes! I looked like something out of star trek!

It does to me. Is it still painful? Whenever I’ve had a burst bleb it’s hurt on the actually site but the rest of the breast pain was relieved but felt bruised.

it also sounds like you may have mastitis. You need to ring the GP for antibiotics, take nurofen regularly and feed lots. It can be helpful to warm your boob up before feeding, put on a nappy which you have soaked in hot water, and massage the lump from the side closest to the nipple.
