My onions sprout no matter where I store them, any ideas?

In the fridge, in the cupboard, in a bowl on the worktop. They always sprout. How can I stop this? Where do you keep yours?

We have an onion bag (cotton lined bag), and keep this in a drawer. Keeps them in the dark. Also have a garlic bag and a potato bag!

I keep them in all kinds of places and its really rare they ever sprout unless I've forgotton one in the back of a cupboard or something.

I usually on the side or in a cupboard. Sometimes in a carrier bag.

Are you using them really infrequently and buying loads at once?

DesidaCrick · 24/04/2022 20:27

There’s not much you can do at this time of year other than buy in small quantities and use them up quickly. When the current seasons onions come though it will be easier.

At this time of year, another alternative is to swap in wild garlic or three cornered leek in recipes if they grow where you live.

Keep them in the dark. That will reduce sprouting.

KangarooKenny · 25/04/2022 08:26

Mine never sprout. I keep them in the dark, in the garage.

DeanStockwelllsBunny · 25/04/2022 08:39

Mine are kept in a onion bucket thingy ( from lakeland ) and don't ofter sprout.
If the do I sick the roots in a bit of water and put them on the non sunny kitchen window sill and use the sprouting bits in salad / omelets / garnish.

My spuds on the other had grown legs and practically walk out of their bucket !

In the freezer, sliced

Mrsjayy · 25/04/2022 08:48

Mine are in the fridge drawer in the bag they came in they hardly ever sprout they last me weeks. Where are you buying yours or have you tried different shops?

TheOccupier · 25/04/2022 09:06

Never happens here although I tend to use them up quite quickly. I usually keep mine in the fridge. If you're buying lots at once and you use them to cook with, you could chop them and freeze them (best way is in ziplock bags and flatten the bag before freezing).

Does it actually matter if they sprout a bit though?

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 25/04/2022 09:11

Totally misread onions as opinions and thought this was some kind of surrealist thread about ADHD or something. Took me a few replies to cotton on.

heldinadream · 25/04/2022 09:11

Keep mine in the fridge, buy them usually fortnightly, pick them individually at supermarket, never have a problem. Unless for some reason I over-buy and they get really old.
So - where are you buying them? Do you pick them individually? How long are you keeping them before they sprout?

AlisonDonut · 25/04/2022 09:13

Onions do want to sprout this time of year, as they are biennials mostly harvested last year, and they want to flower. Keep them cool and dark.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 25/04/2022 09:15

How long are you keeping them for?
mine never sprout (kept in a drawer).
Maybe the place you’re buying them from has kept them for a long time?
