Do secondary schools use iPads a lot?

Have posted this is in parenting too but thought it may be better here:
My dd is in year 6 and the primary school she's at have a few iPads but the kids don't really use them. We don't have an iPad at home and I was just wondering how much typical secondary schools use them and therefore if it would be useful for her to have one at home so she can get used to using them? We have a windows computer but not an Apple Mac so she's not used to apple products.

Ours don't use them at all currently. They are meant to be getting school issued ones at some point but it keeps getting delayed. I don't think it's something they need. They do appear to be expected to have phones though

Ours don’t at all it’s all windows/Google based

@liveforsummer Thank you for your response. I've got her a phone recently but not a smart phone- are they expected to use smart phones in lessons?

My son is in year 7. He has his own laptop at home that is really useful as a lot of homework is set on computer programmes. The school also use email/teams for communication. He never uses an ipad for school and we don't have one

Clymene · 24/04/2022 17:21

Not at all. They do use their phones in lessons though. Not all of them but fairly regularly to do research etc

savehannah · 24/04/2022 17:21

Our have to have school issued Chromebooks. It's worth talking to the possible secondary schools to see....

JazzApple · 24/04/2022 17:21

No, they don't use them at all.

You don't need to get used to using an ipad. They are very easy to use.

Thank you all, that's good to hear. She loves tv (she's not really bothered about the computer) and I don't really want her having much more screen time than necessary on other devices

Not at all. They have chrome books.
Everything is on Google classroom

iPads are fine but I don't think she'll NEED it.

noblegiraffe · 24/04/2022 17:27

When she gets to secondary she would be much better off with a laptop of her own for doing homework on, if you want to buy a device.

I think if the school want Chromebooks IMO it is work getting one early as the apps (docs, sheets, slides etc) are slighily different to Office.

Most schools have chosen a route for digital media- Google, Microsoft or Apple. It would be helpful to find out which 'type' of school yours is.

Bairnsmum05 · 24/04/2022 17:28

Our secondary schools have school issued ipads for each child and they are used daily(glasgow)

Clymene · 24/04/2022 17:31

I would definitely check with school. Our school does everything on office (all the children have outlook accounts and one-drive) so a windows laptop is the best thing to have for homework because hey can access everything on the cloud.

But all schools are different!

FrippEnos · 24/04/2022 17:32

It will depend on the school, but generally ipads, chromebooks, netbooks etc are not worth it.

Unless the school can guarantee that they will be used.
