My friend has recently had Covid and is experiencing hair loss presumably Covid related? she is in her early 30’s and her hair is long, glossy and always looks good so is finding it very distressing!
Does anyone have any experience of this, know of any support groups or any supplements etc to help recovery?

I don't know about covid specifically but she should get her iron levels tested.

Mine came out by the handful when my ferritin was low. NICE guidelines state that ferritin levels of Less than 30 is iron deficient and needs to be treated.

My mum had covid last august and she lost about 2/3's of her hair, it stopped falling out about 3 months after having it. I've felt really awful for her, it's been really upsetting. She's mid 50's and she has been taking hair supplements and extra iron to help it grow back but it's no longer strong enough to dye so her hair dresser won't do that and she hates it. She bought the hair supplements from home bargains, but she doesn't have any support groups. Which is a shame because I think she could do with it. Flowers for your friend.

I was the same, had covid, then lost loads of hair. The rate of loss did slow down and as far as I am aware, my hair is back to normal now.

I had it after a terrible bout of food poisoning years ago. We're talking 15 years ago so my recollection won't be perfect but it's something like: there are three different phases of hair growth, and roughly a third of your hair will be in each phase. If you have an illness or shock, the third in one particular phase can fall out. It does grow back (but the regrowth is maddening, and I found it worse than the loss).

I have long thick hair and no one believed me until I could show them the regrowth. The GP did blood tests, with a particular focus on my thyroid, but by then I was better and the bloods were fine.

I had a less severe version a couple of years before when a friend was diagnosed with cancer at 21. I've had various other illnesses since (flus, tummy bugs etc), and indeed other distressing emotional stuff, and fingers crossed it's never happened again.

I am so grateful to have found this thread - I too have long hair which has been falling out at an alarming rate over the last couple of months. I find it so distressing and am obsessed with researching treatments and supplements. I never linked it to having Covid and am now hoping there's a chance it may grow back. Thank you for sharing your experiences!
