Who should pay for this?

I shall preface by saying that neither of these people is me but I speak to neighbour 1 and neighbour 2.

Neighbour 1 had an oil leak on his car. Quite a big one. It was at the side of the road and not a risk to other vehicles and he didn't do anything about it, just got the car taken away to be fixed.

Neighbour 2 has a cat. Said cat has rolled in the oil and required expensive vets treatment to wash all of the oil out of her fur.

Neighbour 2 has spoken to neighbour 1 who has FINALLY covered the oil puddle in sand and offered to pay the vets bill. However N2 wife has now kicked off and refused to pay the bill as we should all be keeping our cats under control.

I am a little stuck in the middle as I have both of them speaking to me about it but I am with neighbour 2. He should have cleaned up the oil way before he was asked to.

Who do you think should pay the vets bill in this situation? I mean it's not gonna make a difference as N1 is adamant it won't be them but I was interested in others opinions on this!!

well you are not involved so let them get on with it.
the car owner could offer to help towards vets expenses - how long was there a pool of oil?
worse could have happened, someone could have slipped in it, a car could have slid in it

True! I'm just getting bored of getting it in the ear from both sides!

Not sure what you would like me to do to prove that??

The obligatory hand drawn diagram showing the location of car and cat’s residence😂

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 24/04/2022 10:08

@JemimaTiggywinkle will this do?? 😂

Who should pay for this?

They hadn't intended to ask prior to oil spill neighbour offering so not sure why they are bothered now that the offer has been retracted. People are responsible for their own pets, there are all kinds of hazards out there.

itsgettingweird · 24/04/2022 10:13

Cat owner pays.

It's not the car oil person fault the cat is feisty and the owners couldn't wash the oil themselves.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 24/04/2022 10:52

Well I think the diagram explains everything. Extra point for the drawing of the cat.
This is why I love mumsnet 😊

Cat owner pays.

I wonder if neighbour 1s wife is a gardener and has to deal with cat shit in her garden and sees this as a similar situation but in reverse.

I'm a cat lover but also a gardener who despises cat shit. I'm conflicted

When you find out how to do that please do let me know 😂

We paid alot of money for special fencing so cats had free run of the garden but didn't bother anyone else or put themselves in danger.

Oh she definitely isn't, she's a right lazy cow, doesn't work, pays for someone to come and do the garden, pays for a cleaner, she won't even walk her own dog the poor thing.

P.s I'm not a full on nosy neighbour but I work from home by my living room window and I've seen her take that dog out maybe 3 times in 5 years.

Cat fencing. We paid £400 to DIY a 50m perimeter garden. Wish more people would take responsibility for the safety and welfare of their own animals.

Trivester · 24/04/2022 11:13

I wouldn’t ask.
But I would offer to pay.

I don’t think it’s a clear cut situation.

MarriedThreeChildren · 24/04/2022 11:13

The cat owner imo.

So it so happens that the cat rolled in the oil of NDN but really it could have been anywhere. And it could be dog poo, or any other crap lying around in the street/people’s gardens etc…

Unfortunately, the cat is an outdoor cat so that comes with risks. It’s on the cat’s owner shoulders really.

Chewbecca · 24/04/2022 11:32

Cat owner pays but a gesture of goodwill from oil spill man would be appropriate.

twilightcustard · 24/04/2022 12:45

How can cat owner be sure that it was your neighbours oil spill that the cat rolled in. It could have been anywhere as the cat is free roaming.

WhereWasThatFrom · 24/04/2022 15:18

So, OP, are you going to admit to being either oil spill neighbour or oily cat neighbour 😏

Haha! See diagram. I am neither! I am just piggy in the middle who has to listen to complaints about "that bloody oil" and "that bloody cat"

😂😂
