Want to do ballet but I’m a bit socially anxious

I’ve already asked this question on Reddit tbh 😆
Basically I said my anxiety isn’t extreme and I don’t get nervous but I’m very “introverted” and kind of have commitment problems when it comes to seeing the same faces every week and new people staying in my life forever.

From what they said it seems really good you don’t have to be a social butterfly, just turn up and smile and say hi.

I just thought it might seem awkward seeing the teacher every week because it’s like you know each other but you don’t talk much, if that makes sense.
But then I thought I dunno because you’re talking about improving your technique etc

Someone else said they struggle to think of questions for the teacher actually and get anxious seeing the same people but when you have a goal of wanting to improve you forget about things like that.

Maybe I just need to get over myself and decide it won’t be awkward, someone else PMd me and said she did it for 30 years, she must find it alright!

You'll be fine. I doubt there will be much, if any, chatting. You'll be concentrating on following the teacher's instructions. Give it a go!

Yeah you’re right, that’s what everyone else says too, why not 🩰😆

I think it’s wonderful that you’ve found something you want to do. I completely understand the feeling of anxiety, I’m finding it more and more over the years and have to completely push myself to do anything socially. But the worrying about it is always the worst. Give it a few weeks try and see how you get on. It doesn’t have to be forever but you might find you absolutely love it x

hiya
usuallt the classes are quite small because you need more direction
don’t worry I was super intimidated - thinking everyone would be a long neck swan but it wasn’t like it at all. Quite quiet and more relaxing than anything else!
good luck :)

Suppose it helps to remember I’m not the only one with anxiety and I bet there other dancers who might feel like that sometimes!

That’s good because I can imagine getting lost in a big class, and yeah don’t think I’ll be dancing like a swan or something anytime soon 🦢😆

Hi OP just out of interest, is this an adult class for complete beginners? I'd love to do that.

Rubyred7 · 23/04/2022 16:20

Yeah I love ballet even though I would probably be rubbish at first! I’m in Manchester and there seems to be a lot of classes round here but it can be hard to find a place that does graded lessons (which are optional) and barre work.
A lot can just be dancing for fun and fitness
Someone suggested a couple of places to me on Reddit in Knutsford and Stockport.
