Just wondering - I had to learn it for work but don’t use it often, and there are a couple of letters that always get me.

I do know it and use it.
It's handy if someone keeps misheard me when I spell my name or postcode etc.

Redglitter · 21/04/2022 18:58

I use it every day at work. I use it without thinking when I spell anything out of work too

sanityisamyth · 21/04/2022 18:59

I taught my then 6 year old DS (he's now 8) for his Beavers' badge but we both remember it all. I use it a lot for reading out post codes/registration plates on the phone, or spelling out surnames etc. Very useful.

Yes, and yes. My surname is one where the spelling isn't obvious so I use it often.

tkwal · 21/04/2022 18:59

It simplifies things if you are giving details over the phone and have any kind of accent. I have also found people confuse my s for f

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/04/2022 19:01

Know it and use it if necessary. But thats rare.

SageCardy · 21/04/2022 19:01

I know it if it say, comes up in a quiz or something, but if I ever need to use it you can guarantee I'll start spouting J for George, or M for Muppet or some such nonsense.

chisanunian · 21/04/2022 19:01

Yes, I know it mostly, although the one letter I can never remember is one of my initials!

Benedictcucumber · 21/04/2022 19:01

I learnt it for an old job but I still use it now. I usually spell my surname phonetically because it’s got a really weird spelling and people always spell it incorrectly. I was giving my name to a utility company on the phone last week, I spelled my surname phonetically and he said “can you use the letters? I’m not very good with that stuff” which made me chuckle - I get that it’s hard to remember the letters but surely not hard to hear them said to you?!

Floofyfoofy · 21/04/2022 19:01

I had to learn it for a previous job and it’s stayed with me. I use it a lot. My DH (who hasn’t got the clearest voice) also learned it and it helps no end in spelling our surname, which is a bit tricky.

soupmaker · 21/04/2022 19:01

Yes and yes. Use it to spell out post code and car registrations when on the phone. Used it even more when I lived and worked in London and some folk found my accent hard to understand.

Tinkerhelx · 21/04/2022 19:05

Yes and yes.

Use it daily when relaying reference numbers/postcodes/anything that needs to be spelled out.

Chaoslatte · 21/04/2022 19:05

I know and use it on the phone all the time. I don’t speak 100% clearly so it’s pretty essential and I have a print of it in my study for the less memorable letters. I first learnt it in a role where I needed to use a radio.

Nailest · 21/04/2022 19:06

If you do use it, are there letters which always trip you up? I’m forever forgetting k/kilo, and sometimes m/Mike becomes m/mama!

YesItsMeIDontCare · 21/04/2022 19:06

Learnt in Brownies, along with the BSL alphabet, and never forgotten it. I have an unusual surname so I use it quite often!

Can never remember what I've gone upstairs for though 🙄

Gladioli23 · 21/04/2022 19:09

I know it and use it but mainly just for spelling things - I'm much better at anything that comes in my name or address and things like U and W take a moment to return to me.

starlingdarling · 21/04/2022 19:09

I don't use it but had a job where customers often did. 99% of the time I found myself frantically scribbling Mike Kilo etc. Then I'd feel like an idiot after the call ended Blush

FiveNineFive · 21/04/2022 19:12

I wanted to be a police officer when I was a teenager and was obsessed with The Bill so yes. (My username is Tony Stamps call sign/eppilautte number!)

CormoranStrike · 21/04/2022 19:12

Yankee Echo Sierra and Yankee Echo Sierra

MsSquiz · 21/04/2022 19:13

I do know it and have used it, usually over the phone when my accent isn't clear to whoever I'm talking to.

But I have also used "J for jarmas" once, that got a great laugh from the person at the other end! 😂

CoalTit · 21/04/2022 19:14

he said “can you use the letters? I’m not very good with that stuff” which made me chuckle - I get that it’s hard to remember the letters but surely not hard to hear them said to you?!
Did you say "S for sierra, M for Mike, I for India... " or just "Sierra Mike India..."? I can see how the latter would be confusing if you're not used to it.

amylou8 · 21/04/2022 19:15

I used it constantly for years at work. Even though I'm no longer doing that job it's still second nature.

sanityisamyth · 21/04/2022 19:15

@CormoranStrike

Yankee Echo Sierra and Yankee Echo Sierra
🤣
TeenPlusCat · 21/04/2022 19:15

I use it for giving my postcode over the phone as S and F sound too similar if line is poor.

Watto1 · 21/04/2022 19:16

I know it (also from being an avid fan of The Bill back in the day!). However, I felt really silly using it on the phone to the actual police when my car was pinched.
