Just wondering - I had to learn it for work but don’t use it often, and there are a couple of letters that always get me.

Haha, yes I used to use some of it that I picked up. We had a car repairs business back in the day so it was handy. Some letters would never stick so it was always a mash up. Y for example never stuck ('Y' for 'you' 🤔😂).
It was always funniest when both me and the customer knew some and made up the others.

@sanityisamyth
I just find it easier to be told the actual letter rather than the nato phonetic. My brain takes to long to work it and i have to keep asking them to repeat it.

Yes and yes. I was also a fan of The Bill as a young teen so picked up most of them then. As an older teen/young adult I worked in a petrol station so used it to report registration numbers of cars that had driven off without paying to the local police, so decided to memorize them all. Still use them now with post codes and difficult spelling names now as I work in an office. Most recently had to use it to call the fire bridage to report an incident in a local park. The council very helpfully put the post code on the entrance signs.

Often use it with DP instead of directly swearing in front of the children.

"Well, they can Foxtrot Ocsar!"

SD1978 · 22/04/2022 11:32

Find it really irritating when someone starts with it when I don't need it. So I ask, can I have your last name please and they star with foxtrot, indigo, Romeo, tango, hotel..... throws me off. I'd rather they start with firth, spell it, and if I'm missing a letter then give me a t for tango.

AliceMcK · 22/04/2022 11:39

Yes and yes still use it, not as much these days. But it’s always handy when spelling or giving details over the phone. I don’t think it really matters if words are changed as long as it’s clear what your spelling. I often change words to suit the situation.

dudsville · 22/04/2022 11:44

I don't know it and therefore can't use it properly, but I once had a funny experience with it. I was managing a complaint and offered to email someone some documents and he gave me his email address, which I took down as "[email protected]". I could not work out why it kept bouncing as undeliverable!

Spidey66 · 22/04/2022 12:26

I used to work as a prison service nurse where its used for the radios. After hearing the tests 3 times a day I picked it up without actually being taught it. I could probably recite it but rarely use it. I often say when spelling out 's for sugar, m for mother' which isn't actually right

CounsellorTroi · 22/04/2022 12:27

Yes I k ow it. Sometimes if I can’t sleep I recite it backwards in my head. Works a treat.

The bloke at the sorting office still calls me Disco Panda after a rather bodged attempt to enunciate my postcode through a mask.

You should have that as a username - it's made to be a username Grin

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 19:46

Yes and use it frequently

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/04/2022 20:25

Yes and yes.

my dad taught it to us on days out when we were forced to go on walks and stuff, then I worked in a contact centre so it was helpful there. I tend to use it out of habit over the phone.

I'm dyslexic and the phonetic alphabet is a complete nightmare as they say a word and I'm still trying to work out which letter it starts with when they carry on saying words which I can't remember as I'm still concentrating on the first one. 🤯
