Just wondering - I had to learn it for work but don’t use it often, and there are a couple of letters that always get me.

Yes & yes - ish.

I use it quite a lot on the phone as I have an accent & it helps! Though I've long since changed some of the words -oops!!

zseago · 21/04/2022 19:38

Yes, I have to use it for my weirdo name and also relatively frequently on work phone calls.

I have said "Tango Yankee" more than anyone should ever have to.

twoandcooplease · 21/04/2022 19:45

I think it's a great skill to have. Pp said her son learned it for beavers. I'll teach my son it when he's bigger too
M for Mike - I always say Mother! Then correct myself and wonder for 5 mins which one is the 'right' one

Once I worked in a call centre job for a bank in a department who blocked accounts. For money laundering and fraud etc. not the nicest of customers. Anyway, this man was raging and I had to ask him to spell his name to find the details. He used his own phonetics of swear words. Wanker and cunt were definitely two of them 🙄

Yes though sometimes I forget and make a word up. My first and last names are both awkward to spell plus can be easily misheard over the phone.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 21/04/2022 19:49

I learned it for work. I'm not native English speaker, so my pronunciation is sometimes a bit off. So, it's quite handy to know this.

Harridan1981 · 21/04/2022 19:50

Yes I do, comes in handy regularly. Use over VHF on the water as well.

Gingernaut · 21/04/2022 19:55

Yes and Yes.

Used to work alongside police and now work on a Switchboard taking messages , including postcodes and spellings of surnames.

Letter P confuses me - it's Papa, not Piper.

Fishwishy · 21/04/2022 19:57

I use it all the time (ex military) and it often causes confusion with civilians. But I really find it helps communicating with those who know it

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 21/04/2022 19:57

My dad taught me as a child. He was in the military and saw it as essential along with morse code and map reading. Hadn't used it in ages but my son has just joined Beavers and like a previous poster, I've been teaching him.

I used to stay in what some people thought was a bit of a rough area. There were a group of teenage boys hung around, very intimidating & I hated passing them. I was going to my car one night when they approached me. One of them shouted over 'Haw missus are you a polis' I said no & was told 'Ma dad says you are' Before I could say anything the bold boy says 'Do you do all that fancy spelling they do on the telly' When I said I knew it I was asked 'Will you spell my name' I couldn't believe it

Next few mins was spent going round this group spelling their names 😂

Their parting shot was 'Bravo Yankee Echo' then 🙄

Every time I saw them they'd have random words they wanted spelled out. So bizarre but got to be quite funny. And they weren't half as tough as I thought

Ah, I love a happy ending!

I don't and I always manage to make people laugh with my alternative version. Keep meaning to learn the unphonetic alphabet (p for pterodactyl) 😀.

MrOllivander · 21/04/2022 20:06

@MeanderingGently

I never did get the nato phonetic thingy..... I mean, how is 'C' for Charlie?? Surely Charlie is a 'ch' sound, not a 'c' sound, or am I totally missing something?
Here, this is interesting

MyCatsSlave · 21/04/2022 20:07

I use it at work and out of work. So used to using it, I used it at the opticians last week which totally confused the optician

AnxiousSquirrel · 21/04/2022 20:10

Yes, I use it regularly

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/04/2022 20:12

@JaninaDuszejko
My favourites are M, mnemonic & S, see 😀

Bagadverts · 21/04/2022 20:16

Yes, have picked it up for work. Just had a look and have never known Q was Quebec and used queen. Everything else ok.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 21/04/2022 20:18

I use it every day at work, and outside of work, especially whenever I have to spell my unusual surname. After 20 odd years, it's like second nature now.

takingmytimeonmyride · 21/04/2022 20:22

I've learned it a few times, and I'm a scout leader so we've done it recently. However, yesterday I had to give my car registration to the RAC and couldn't remember any of it. That might have been because I was stressed (mainly because I don't like phone calls, the car was on the drive and broken, so I wasn't stuck anywhere)

I need more practice!

BronwenFrideswide · 21/04/2022 20:27

Yes I know it and yes I use it and yes there is one letter that always trips me up and that is the letter U, I scrabble around a bit until I remember.

Cherms · 21/04/2022 20:31

Yes because Brownies. But I use it because my surname, despite only being 6 letters long, apparently has multiple ways to mishear it and misspell it.

Cherms · 21/04/2022 20:33

I read on here someone said W for Wanky and my car reg has a Y in it. I regularly catch myself and stop myself from absentmindedly saying Y for Wanky.

Cherms · 21/04/2022 20:36

One of them I spelt my name using this alphabet and got put onto their system as Cherms Romeo. I liked it and didn't bother to correct it!

youwouldthink · 21/04/2022 20:38

All the time. I work in travel and essential

PaperMonster · 21/04/2022 20:41

Yes, I learned it when I worked in the MoD. I use it f as it’ll frequently as I live in an area where the adjacent area has a postcode which sounds similar.

Changeymcgee · 21/04/2022 20:43

I know it and use it on a daily basis..... Did it stop me from telling someone a vehicle reg when booking a ferry "Y for Wanky..." no it didn't 🤣
