Is this a bee's nest or a wasp's nest?

I disturbed a black-and-yellow buzzing thing beginning to make a nest in a location that was totally unsuitable (from a human's point of view).

This is what it had made so far. It's about 2cm diameter and was hanging from the little stem in the outside of the cone.

I think wasp nest?

Will it try to get back in again tomorrow?

That's a wasps' nest

MammaWeasel · 20/04/2022 21:38

Wasp I'm afraid

gamerchick · 20/04/2022 21:39

Yeah or a hornets. Knock it down now while it's dark. Might be worth legging it after like.

Bloody clever beasties though you have to admit.

Yeah, I grabbed the whole container and fled with it. The beastie was not pleased! I've vacuumed the area, but haven't managed to clean every crevice yet.

Will it return tomorrow to try again?

Totally! I was quite sad to have to stop such an amazing construction. Part of me was saying "Leave it for a few days to see what it makes." The other part was screaming "Are you mad, woman?!?!"

It won't come back. It's a survival thing.

They're amazing from my own phobic perspective, I just see misery for the neighborhood come autumn when their stomachs stop working and they get grumpy. But they are so useful in the garden pest wise.

LunchWithAGruffalo · 20/04/2022 22:19

Definitely wasp.

I've taken down a couple of attempts about that size fro the same spot in the last few weeks, so I'd say its reasonably likely that they will start again.

Google is suggesting that peppermint oil is a deterrent. So, I've stuck a few cotton wool balls of Obas oil around mine till I can get some.
