I've just given up Netflix

And it feels so good.

I read a story about how loads of people are giving it up, and suddenly thought what a good idea. I tried to remember the last time I watched something on it and couldn't.

So pleased to have saved myself £14/month. Most satisfying thing I've done today.

I haven't unsubscribed but have gone from the more expensive price plan to the cheaper one. Lots of people are giving up streaming services as a way to save money. I think Netflix is one of the ones they are more likely to give up.

I have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Plus. Disney has really upped its game in the last few months and has a lot more stuff for adults on there. Prime is fairly rubbish for streaming but I find it useful for the delivery so if I had to give one up it would probably be Netflix.

They lost 1/3 of their share value today. I don't see them lasting. Apparently they are considering cheaper payment plans but with ads.

EliyanahM · 20/04/2022 21:20

Good for you! I gave up normal TV (because screw paying for a 'license') years ago and never looked back. For most of the time since then I only used YouTube via my telly for my little girl. Then my friend shared his Netflix account with me for free, but we hardly use it either! I cancelled Amazon Prime and feel great about that.

MaryAndHerNet · 20/04/2022 21:21

Netflix is still cheaper than a license so I stick with it and throw in an occasional month of Disney+

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/04/2022 21:25

We have too, but it was a planned swap to Disney+ (we only get one subscription at once).

TV licence is the one I resent the most but we do watch a lot of BBC.

tiredanddangerous · 20/04/2022 21:29

I want to cancel Sky but DH won't let me. I'm happy to keep Netflix because it's a fraction of the cost of bloody sky.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 20/04/2022 21:30

Yep, me too, I paid £5.99 pm and never used it. I have Amazon prime too, but tbh we watch so little tv especially now the weather is improving that it was such a waste.

TheChosenTwo · 20/04/2022 21:32

Dh were in the car earlier and heard on the radio that they were planning on introducing adverts due to such a big drop in subscribers - I hadn’t even considered cancelling until that point! I don’t want to watch bloody adverts!! We’ve got now tv, Netflix, Amazon prime, Disney plus and the full sky package - and yet still, there are things the dc want to watch sometimes and they aren’t on any of them and we have to pay extra to watch it 🙄 infuriating.

Tyrozet · 20/04/2022 21:32

I heard on the radio today that they are introducing adverts to make up for the revenue lost in memberships with people cancelling.

TheChosenTwo · 20/04/2022 21:34

Dh was muttering something about britbox the other day and I just looked at him! I don’t even watch much in the way of telly on any of the streaming services or normal telly. Only have prime for the delivery, not sure anyone has ever watched anything on it.

ISpyCobraKai · 20/04/2022 21:42

I have Sky, Prime, Netflix and Apple TV, still less than £60pm and worth it to me, I watch a lot.

Ifitistobesaid · 20/04/2022 21:46

It’s still my favourite of the streaming channels but Apple TV is starting to come out with some good stuff. Rarely watch anything on Prime.

Sunnytwobridges · 20/04/2022 21:49

I could never give it up, but then I don't have live TV at all.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 20/04/2022 21:49

I've been thinking of cancelling as well.

Their best series are over now, some I the ones liked were either not renewed, or just much worse after an ignition good first series. Bridgerton 2 was rubbish, Stranger Things as well, lots of good stuff has disappeared.

And why on Earth did they may Harry and Meghan all the millions?

If they bring adverts as well the that will just add insult to injury.

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

If you watch a lot of BBC, why do you resent it?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/04/2022 21:54

@Luredbyapomegranate because its relatively expensive compared to the streaming services. Its mainly the kids watching CBBC.

ENoeuf · 20/04/2022 21:55

I love Netflix. Don’t watch Prime but keep for the delivery although that’s got rubbish recently. Love Disney for the kids. tried apple and nothing was free except a few headline shows so dropped it. Have Funimation for the kids.

AHungryCaterpillar · 20/04/2022 21:57

I cancelled it recently, I don’t watch tv and my kids never put Netflix on, only YouTube we don’t watch live tv as I don’t want to pay for a tv license

AHungryCaterpillar · 20/04/2022 21:58

We have Disney+ but my kids don’t really watch it so may cancel that as well.

HairyToity · 20/04/2022 22:00

We pay £5.99 a month. It's not expensive enough to make me want to stop, although we don't watch that much. We also have BBC licence fee and amazon prime. Occasionally have a month of Disney too.

We don't watch very much amazon, but sometimes the next day delivery is useful.

If money got very tight I'd stop Netflix though.

onemouseplace · 20/04/2022 22:05

We ditched Sky (Broadband, TV and line rental) last year and saved ourselves a small fortune - we now just have broadband that doesn't need the phone line.

I dithered for ages as I used to love my Sky Box, but we got a firestick and our 15 year old tv now works basically as a smart tv. It's bloody brilliant (other than screeching youtubers). We tend to cycle subscriptions - we've currently got Prime (but rarely watch anything but use the delivery), Disney+ (free with DH's phone I think), Apple TV (free with DD's phone, but about to cancel) and Netflix. We cancelled Now Cinema/ Entertainment as there wasn't anything new for a while, but will probably go back when there are a few things we want to watch.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 20/04/2022 22:13

If they introduce ads, I'm definitely cancelling. I'm not paying for a subscription service to have to pay for ads.

The quality of the shoes has plummeted. They seem to think password sharing has caused the shares problem. It hasn't. It's the shit programmes.

HerbErtlinger · 20/04/2022 22:16

I use Amazon prime far more but I'm holding out for the new series of Umbrella Academy which I love

Tryingtokeepgoing · 20/04/2022 22:19

As I understand it the adverts will only be on a cheaper subscription…pay the normal rate and you’ll still get ad free Netflix. There’s also a rumour that they’ll be clamping down in sharing of logins as well…I can’t see that leading to an increase in subscribers though!

Cloud16 · 20/04/2022 22:27

Well done OP. You get a lot of content on free streaming services anyway. I realised I watched most of my shows for free on STV Player so cancelled Netflix too!

DreamingOfTowels · 20/04/2022 22:58

This is the hill I will die on - I will give up a lot before I give up Netflix.

we already ditched Sky years ago - that was £48 per month at the time. Ditched the tv license in 2017 and haven’t looked back thanks to Netflix. It’s what, £5.99 per month going up to £6.99? Almost half the price of a tv license and much more flexibility for us.
